Quilava official artwork

Quilava is a Fire-type Pokémon, the Volcano Pokémon, number 156 (#0156) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 19 kg.

Quilava is the Volcano Pokémon, and a Legends: Arceus Pokédex entry warns you to take care if it turns its back, because that means the flames are about to be aimed at you. Its fur, the Pokédex says, is wholly impervious to fire.

How to pronounce Quilava

Lore

Biology

Quilava has a long, slender body, dark blue-green on top and cream underneath, with triangular ears and red eyes. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 19 kg. Five red spots can project flame: two on the forehead and three along its rear.

Behaviour

Quilava keeps foes away with the heat of its flames and blasts of superheated air, and the Pokédex says it dodges attacks with remarkable nimbleness even while scorching an enemy. Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says the flames blaze brightly while it sleeps.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, though Bulbapedia says it is rare in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet you get one by evolving Cyndaquil in The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Quilava burns with Ember, Flame Wheel, Flame Charge, Lava Plume, Flamethrower and Inferno, and learns Eruption late. Its Abilities are Blaze and the hidden Flash Fire. With 80 base Special Attack and 80 base Speed it is a quick special attacker.

Name origin

Quilava may combine quill and lava. The Japanese name is Magmarashi (マグマラシ), which Bulbapedia reads as magma plus anaguma (badger) plus yamaarashi (porcupine).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Quilava's body resembles a stoat when it stands upright, while the pattern of its flames recalls the quills of a crested porcupine or a lowland streaked tenrec. Its triangular outline and its moves Smokescreen and Eruption may point to a volcano. It may also tie to Hecate, the Greek goddess, whose symbols include polecats and a pair of torches. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Cyndaquil at level 14 and into Typhlosion at level 36, or into Hisuian Typhlosion if it evolves in Hisui.

In the games

Quilava is the middle form of Johto's Fire starter line, introduced in Gold and Silver. In Legends: Arceus, it appears in the Crimson Mirelands during space-time distortions and, after Request 102, in massive mass outbreaks. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ash's Cyndaquil evolved into a Quilava in 'An Old Family Blend!' after fighting one of Team Rocket's mechas. It later tied with Nando's Armaldo at the Lily of the Valley Conference.

Fun facts

  • Jeff Kalles, who suggested the English name Quilava, said it filled a gap: Nintendo and The Pokémon Company hoped to have every letter of the alphabet covered, Bulbapedia reports.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Quilava, Typhlosion and Entei are all called the Volcano Pokémon and can all learn Eruption.
  • In 'The Gates of Warp!', Dialga's influence made Alternate World Dawn's Quilava turn back into a Cyndaquil in a flashback.
