Lore

Biology

Typhlosion is a bulky, long-bodied quadruped that can also move on two legs. Its body is cream with a dark green-blue back and head, and red spots across the back of its neck produce fire. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 79.5 kg. The Pokédex says it hides behind a shimmering heat haze made by its flames.

Behaviour

Typhlosion is dangerous when angry. The Pokédex says that at the peak of its rage it becomes so hot that anything touching it bursts into flame, and that it has a secret, devastating move that involves rubbing its fur together to cause huge explosions. Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says it tosses and turns in its sleep, so a sleeping Typhlosion is best left alone.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, though Bulbapedia says it is rare in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet you get one by evolving Quilava in The Indigo Disk. The Hisuian form comes from evolving a Quilava in Legends: Arceus and bringing it over through HOME.

Powers

Typhlosion breathes Flamethrower, Lava Plume, Inferno and Overheat, rolls with Flame Wheel and Flame Charge, and learns Eruption. Its Abilities are Blaze and the hidden Flash Fire. Hisuian Typhlosion, with the hidden Ability Frisk, moves gracefully and gently until angered, then Bulbapedia says it can unleash 108 ghost flames from its neck that take the shape of fierce beasts. The Johtonian form is a fast special attacker with 109 base Special Attack and 100 base Speed; the Hisuian form raises Special Attack to 119.

Name origin

Typhlosion may blend typhoon and explosion, and Bulbapedia notes it could also nod to Typhon, the Greek monster said to lie under Mount Etna. The Japanese name is Bakphoon (バクフーン), possibly from bakufū (a blast from an explosion) plus typhoon.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Typhlosion's body resembles a badger or wolverine, while its flames recall the quills of porcupines, hedgehogs and echidnas. The Hisuian form seems to draw on psychopomp figures, who guide souls, and possibly Kamuy-huci, the Ainu goddess of fire, and its flame count matches the number of beads on a Buddhist japamala. The mujina, a shapeshifting yokai with ghostly fire, could explain its Fire and Ghost typing. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Quilava at level 36, and in Hisui the same evolution produces Hisuian Typhlosion.

In the games

Typhlosion is the final form of Cyndaquil, the Fire partner Pokémon of Gold, Silver and Crystal, and Hisuian Typhlosion is the final form of the Fire starter in Legends: Arceus. Bulbapedia lists Typhlosion as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Typhlosion's main series debut was in 'Gonna Rule The School!', where a student borrowed one from the Pokémon Trainers' School to battle a Feraligatr. Jimmy's Typhlosion in 'The Legend of Thunder!' was his first partner Pokémon, a gift from Professor Elm when it was a Cyndaquil.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Hisuian Typhlosion is the only Pokémon that can learn Infernal Parade.
  • Bulbapedia says the internal code of Legends: Arceus gives Hisuian Typhlosion the hidden Ability Flash Fire, not the Frisk that players see.
  • Bulbapedia says Typhlosion and Togetic were the only Generation II Pokémon missing from the anime before the Generation III era.
