Lore

Biology

Totodile is a blue, bipedal crocodilian with powerful jaws, red eyes with ridges above them and a yellow V-shaped marking on its chest. Three red spines run down its back and another sits on the tip of its tail. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 9.5 kg. The Pokédex says its jaws are very powerful for such a small body.

Behaviour

Totodile is playful but rough. Its Pokédex entries say that even its Trainer has to be careful, that its well-developed jaws can crush anything, and that it is unwise to turn your back on it.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is the water's edge, and Bulbapedia places it around rivers, ponds and lakes, though it is scarce in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Savanna Biome of The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Totodile fights with Water Gun, Bite, Scary Face, Ice Fang, Crunch, Slash, Aqua Tail and Hydro Pump. Its Abilities are Torrent, which strengthens Water moves when it is low on health, and the hidden Sheer Force, which trades side effects for extra power. With 65 base Attack it is a physical Water starter.

Name origin

Totodile may combine tot, a small child, with crocodile. The Japanese name is Waninoko (ワニノコ), which can be read as 'child of a crocodile', from wani and ko.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Totodile as modelled on a young crocodilian, and says the yellow chest marking may refer to the yellow stripes of juvenile American alligators. The crest on its back resembles a mohawk, which may hint at its boisterous personality. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves into Croconaw at level 18, which becomes Feraligatr at level 30.

In the games

Totodile is the Water partner Pokémon that Professor Elm hands over in New Bark Town in Gold, Silver and Crystal, and again in HeartGold and SoulSilver. In Legends: Z-A it is one of three first partners offered in Lumiose City, alongside Chikorita and Tepig, and it also lives in Wild Zone 20. The Mega Dimension DLC adds it to the 2★ and 3★ Water-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

In 'Don't Touch That 'dile', its debut, Totodile wandered away from Professor Elm's lab and chomped Jessie's hair. Ash won one in 'The Totodile Duel' after a battle with Misty over who would keep it, and it stayed on his team throughout Johto.

Fun facts

  • In Pokémon Sleep, Bulbapedia says, Totodile and its evolutions sleep with one eye open, resting only half the brain at a time, a habit called unihemispheric sleep.
  • Bulbapedia says Totodile's level 18 evolution is the latest of any basic first partner Pokémon, tied with Turtwig.
  • In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, a Totodile can occasionally swing in on a rope and take the Egg's place on the Ruby Field, a job that otherwise goes to Aerodactyl.
