Rampardos official artwork

Rampardos is a Rock-type Pokémon, the Head Butt Pokémon, number 409 (#0409) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 102.5 kg.

Rampardos has a skull a foot thick that the Pokédex says is harder than steel, and in ancient times people dug up its fossils to make helmets. That thick skull left its brain small, and one entry says some theories blame its stupidity for its extinction.

How to pronounce Rampardos

Lore

Biology

Rampardos is a large, dark grey dinosaur with a pearl-like dome on its head, blue stripes, and spikes on its knees, neck and nose. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 102.5 kg. The Pokédex says its thick skull stops it fainting even when two Rampardos collide, and one entry claims a revived Rampardos once escaped and flattened a skyscraper with a headbutt.

Behaviour

Rampardos is a brute. It charges into things head first, which Bulbapedia says trains its strength and reflexes, and the Pokédex says it tears down jungle trees while chasing prey.

Habitat

The Pokédex puts it in jungles. In Scarlet and Violet the base games offer it only by trade or transfer, while The Indigo Disk adds 4 star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Its Abilities are Mold Breaker and, hidden, Sheer Force. Its best-known attacks are Head Smash, learned at level 58, and Zen Headbutt at level 43, and it gets Endeavor as it evolves. With base Attack 165 and Speed 58, it hits harder than almost anything else but is easy to outrun.

Name origin

Rampardos may combine 'rampart', 'ram' or 'rampage', and 'hard', along with Cranidos. The Japanese name is Rampald (ラムパルド), possibly from rampart or ram plus hard or bald.

Design inspiration

Like Cranidos it is based on Pachycephalosaurus; Bulbapedia says its horns resemble those of juveniles, which were once classed as their own species, Stygimoloch and Dracorex. It also appears to be the unstoppable force to Bastiodon's immovable object.

Evolution notes

Cranidos becomes Rampardos at level 30, with no other condition.

In the games

Rampardos first appears in Diamond and Pearl as the evolution of a Cranidos revived from a Skull Fossil. In Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Coronet Highlands, but it is not in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Roark's Cranidos evolved into Rampardos in 'Wild in the Streets!' after being trapped in a net during a Team Rocket attack, and that episode was the species' first appearance. The following episode saw it beat Ash's Aipom and Pikachu before Turtwig defeated it.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says its base Attack of 165 is the highest of any Pokémon that is not Legendary, Mythical, an Ultra Beast or a Mega.
  • Rampardos and Cranidos are the only Fossil Pokémon with a single type.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, a Rampardos is the shopkeeper behind Box Buster in Post Town, opening Treasure Boxes for 150 Poké; he returns in Super Mystery Dungeon.
