Reshiram is a Dragon/Fire-type Pokémon, the Vast White Pokémon, number 643 (#0643) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 3.2 m tall and weighs 330 kg.

Reshiram is the Vast White Pokémon, a dragon whose tail flames are said to be hot enough to scorch the world. In Unova's legends it is one half of a single dragon that split in two, and it backs anyone who wants to build a world of truth.

Lore

Biology

Reshiram is a white, wispy dragon with bird-like and mammal-like touches, 3.2 m tall and 330 kg. A long mane streams back from its snout, its arms flare into wing-like shapes, and its tail is a mass of plumes held by grey bands, which glows with fire when its emotions surge. It has no gender.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says its tail flare shifts the atmosphere and changes the weather, and legend says it razes the realms of anyone who turns from the truth and gives in to greed. In Unova's story it and Zekrom were once one dragon, and Reshiram sided with the twin who valued truth. Bulbapedia adds that if its body is destroyed it becomes the Light Stone, which a believing hero can wake again.

Habitat

Reshiram has no listed habitat; Unova's legends place it in the region's distant past. In The Indigo Disk, one waits in Paldea's East Province once you take a Reshiram Treat from Snacksworth, and it otherwise arrives by trade or HOME. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its only Ability is Turboblaze, which lets its moves ignore Abilities that would block them; only Reshiram and White Kyurem can have it. Its signature move is Blue Flare, learnt at level 88 in Scarlet and Violet, and it also learns Fusion Flare and Draco Meteor. The DNA Splicers fuse it with Kyurem into White Kyurem. With base Special Attack 150 and Special Defense 120, it is a powerful special attacker.

Name origin

Reshiram comes from the Japanese 白 shiro, 'white'. Ken Sugimori has said the 'Re' was chosen as a softer sound than Zekrom's 'Ze', because Reshiram is the less physically powerful of the pair. The Japanese name is Reshiram (レシラム).

Design inspiration

Keiko Moritsugu drafted Reshiram and Zekrom and Ken Sugimori finished them; Reshiram's final form ended up very different from her draft. A designer article Bulbapedia cites says its tail is based on an electric turbine and its look was made light and feminine to contrast Zekrom. The yin and yang reading, from its Japanese category 'White Yang Pokémon', is Bulbapedia's own.

In the games

Reshiram is the cover Legendary of Pokémon Black, where you awaken it as your own near the end of the story; in White a rival uses it against you. In White 2, N's Reshiram returns, and after the story you can battle him again and catch it at Dragonspiral Tower.

In the anime

Reshiram was central to the arc about N, as the target of Ghetsis and Team Plasma's plan. In the films Victini and Reshiram and Victini and Zekrom it is controlled by Ash in one and by Damon in the other, and it speaks through telepathy.

Fun facts

• Reshiram and Zekrom were revealed on the same day, 28 May 2010, on both the English and Japanese official Pokémon sites, making them the first two species revealed simultaneously worldwide.
• Before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Reshiram's catch rate was 45, which Bulbapedia puts down to it being a required catch in the story; today it is 3.
• In the film Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Hoopa summons a Reshiram 100 years before the story, alongside Zekrom and Regigigas, and all three are easily beaten.
• Of all known Pokémon, only Reshiram learns Blue Flare by levelling up.
