Lore
Biology
Salandit measures 0.6 m and weighs 4.8 kg. It is a dark grey lizard with a black head and feet, and an orange-red line runs down its back and tail. Two short flat spines at the base of its neck look like a bandanna or mask. Both flame and toxic gas come from a marking where its tail meets its body, and the gas is made by burning its own body fluids.
Behaviour
Salandit is a sneaky hunter. The Pokédex says it creeps up behind its prey and immobilises it with poison gas before the prey knows it is there. Males do whatever the females tell them, according to the Ultra Sun entry. The Ultra Moon entry says Salandit struggles against Spinda, which is always reeling already.
Habitat
The Pokédex places it around volcanoes and dry, craggy places. In the games it lives in Alola's Wela Volcano Park, in caves across Paldea and in rocky, cave-filled parts of Kitakami.
Diet
Bug Pokémon drawn in by its sweet-smelling gas are its prey, according to the Pokédex and Bulbapedia.
Powers
Its Ability Corrosion lets it poison Poison and Steel types, which would normally be immune; its hidden Ability is Oblivious. It learns Smog and Ember early, then Poison Fang, Incinerate and Flamethrower, and Nasty Plot sharpens its Special Attack. With 71 Special Attack and 77 Speed it is more of a fast trickster than a hard hitter.
Name origin
Salandit may combine salamander and bandit. The Japanese name is Yatoumori (ヤトウモリ), which may blend yatō (burglar) and imori (newt).
Design inspiration
Salandit looks modelled on a salamander (some species are toxic) and may also draw on the Japanese fire belly newt, whose colouring is similar. In legend salamanders are also linked with fire and sometimes poison, and Bulbapedia notes some resemblance to bandits too.
Evolution notes
Evolves into Salazzle at level 33, but only if it is female.
In the games
Salandit lives in Wela Volcano Park, the site of Kiawe's trial, in Sun and Moon, where it first appeared. It returns in Scarlet and Violet and The Teal Mask, including 2-star Tera Raids, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Three Salandit debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!' under Tupp's ownership. In 'Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge!' one tried to grab the Egg that Lillie was minding, and was sent off.
