Lore

Biology

Scolipede is a plump, dark magenta centipede, 2.5 m long and 200.5 kg, that usually rears the front half of its body off the ground. Long banded horns sit on its head and rear. Four pairs of short purple claws on its neck inject poison, while its four longer hind legs let it gallop, and it may curl up into a ball while it sleeps.

Behaviour

Scolipede is highly aggressive and does not give up until it wins. It chases foes down with quick movements and attacks relentlessly with its horns, then clamps prey in its neck claws, slams it into the ground and jabs it with toxic spikes. The Shield Pokédex says it fights territorial battles with Centiskorch, and that the winner eats the loser.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Scolipede lives in lush forests. In the Isle of Armor expansion it wanders the Forest of Focus.

Powers

Scolipede's Abilities are Poison Point and Swarm, with Speed Boost hidden. It hits hard with Megahorn, Poison Tail and Double-Edge and can set up with Iron Defense and Baton Pass. Its base Speed of 112 and Attack of 100 are the highest of any Generation V Poison type. Mega Scolipede, introduced in Legends: Z-A, is 3.2 m tall and 230.5 kg, with the lone Ability Shell Armor and thick lavender armour. Attack rises to 140 and Defense to 149, but Speed falls to 62, and its venom now glows and sharpens its viciousness.

Name origin

Scolipede may combine Scolopendra, a genus of centipedes, with 'centipede' or 'millipede'. The Japanese name is Pendror (ペンドラー), possibly also from Scolopendra.

Design inspiration

Tomohiro Kitakaze designed Scolipede and its pre-evolutions. Bulbapedia says it may be based on a giant centipede such as Scolopendra gigantea. Its horse-like look may pun on yasude, the Japanese word for millipede, whose first character means 'horse', and Mega Scolipede's armour may recall barding, armour for war horses. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Scolipede evolves from Whirlipede at level 30 and is the last stage of its line.

In the games

Roxie, the Poison-type Gym Leader of Virbank City in Black 2 and White 2, treats Scolipede as her signature Pokémon and leads with it at the Pokémon World Tournament. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it lives in the Jaune District's Wild Zone 15 and Wild Zone 20 at Centrico Plaza, with Hyperspace Lumiose added by the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Scolipede debuted in 'The Bloom Is on Axew!', when Iris's Axew fell into its antennae and it went on a rampage until Iris's Excadrill stopped it with Drill Run. Roxie used one against Ash's Leavanny in 'Rocking the Virbank Gym!' Parts 1 and 2, and Ash's Pignite beat it with Fire Pledge.

Fun facts

  • Mega Scolipede shares the title of tallest Bug-type Pokémon with Slither Wing and Arceus's Bug form.
  • Bulbapedia points out that the Scolipede and Centiskorch families live in different parts of Galar, yet the Pokédex has them feuding anyway.
  • In the Unova horoscope, Scolipede stands for the month of November.
