Lore
Biology
Cottonee is a white, round Pokémon, 0.3 m tall and 0.6 kg, with puffy cotton on its head and underside, orange oval eyes and furled, notched leaves on its sides. It is so light that the wind moves it freely, unless rain soaks its cotton and weighs it down.
Behaviour
Cottonee goes wherever the wind takes it, and on rainy days it shelters under big trees because wet cotton makes it heavy. When it meets others of its kind they stick together, and a big enough mass resembles a cumulonimbus cloud. If attacked, it shoots cotton from its body as a decoy, and the lost cotton grows back quickly.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the Coastal Biome of Blueberry Academy's Terarium, added by The Indigo Disk.
Powers
Cottonee's Abilities are Prankster, which gives its status moves priority, and Infiltrator, which lets its moves slip past screens and substitutes; Chlorophyll is hidden. It uses Fairy Wind, Stun Spore, Mega Drain and Leech Seed, and later learns Cotton Spore and Cotton Guard. Its base stats are low, with Speed 66 the best, so it is chiefly a stepping stone to Whimsicott.
Name origin
Cottonee may come from cotton, cottony, cottonweed and perhaps 'wee', meaning small. The Japanese name is Monmen (モンメン), possibly from momen, the Japanese word for cotton.
Design inspiration
Atsuko Nishida designed Cottonee and Whimsicott. Bulbapedia says Cottonee is modelled on a puff of cotton and a sheep, a link that appears to come from both giving us clothing material, and its leaves may allude to the lamb's ear plant. Drifting on the wind also recalls dandelion seeds and clouds. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Cottonee evolves into Whimsicott when a Sun Stone is used on it, with no level requirement.
In the games
Cottonee first appears in Black and White, where wild ones live in Black's Pinwheel Forest, Lostlorn Forest and Abundant Shrine. Wild Cottonee reached Scarlet and Violet only with The Indigo Disk, including 2-star Tera Raid Battles at Blueberry Academy. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Cottonee debuted in 'Cottonee in Love!', where Ash and his friends helped a male Cottonee grow strong enough to impress a female he liked, then joined the species' mass migration.
