Lore

Biology

Whimsicott is a small, brown, two-legged Pokémon, 0.7 m tall and 6.6 kg, with a mane of cotton-like fluff on its back, neck and forehead and green lobes like curled horns on either side of its face. A green, star-shaped calyx sits behind it. The Pokédex says it can slip through any gap, however small, and that its cotton keeps growing in sunlight until it tears off the excess and scatters it.

Behaviour

Whimsicott is a notorious prankster. It sneaks in, hides important things, moves furniture and leaves balls of cotton behind, and the Sun Pokédex says it giggles to itself before it takes off. It has no fixed home and floats about on whirling winds, and the Moon Pokédex says a strong gust can blow the cotton right off its head.

Habitat

The Ultra Moon Pokédex says it does not live in a fixed location. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the Coastal Biome of Blueberry Academy's Terarium.

Powers

Whimsicott's Abilities are Prankster, which gives its status moves priority, and Infiltrator; Chlorophyll is hidden. It attacks with Moonblast, Hurricane and Energy Ball and disrupts with Cotton Guard, Tailwind, Helping Hand and Stun Spore. Its base Speed of 116 is the highest of any Generation V Grass type.

Name origin

Whimsicott may combine 'whimsical' and 'cotton'. The Japanese name is Elfuun (エルフーン), possibly from 'elf' and either fū ('wind') or 'typhoon'.

Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Whimsicott. Bulbapedia says it is modelled on a blooming cotton boll and a sheep, may recall the medieval legend of the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary, and wanders like a tumbleweed. Its mischief resembles impish folklore creatures such as Brazil's Saci. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Whimsicott evolves from Cottonee with a Sun Stone and has no further evolution.

In the games

Whimsicott first appears in Black and White, where wild ones live in Black's Pinwheel Forest and Lostlorn Forest. Sword and Shield has it in Max Raid Battles, and the Expansion Pass adds the Crown Tundra's Ballimere Lake. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in The Indigo Disk's Coastal Biome and in 4-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles at Blueberry Academy. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Whimsicott's animated series debut came in 'Clash of the Connoisseurs!', where the disguised Burgundy judged one as a possible partner for Marigold. In 'Unrest at the Nursery!', Layla looks after a Whimsicott that is accidentally hit by a Vullaby's Punishment.
