Lore

Biology

Sentret is a small brown mammal with long dark ears that are pink inside, beady black eyes and a round body with wide arms. A white ring marks its belly and dark stripes circle its tail. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 6 kg. It can stand upright but usually moves on all fours.

Behaviour

Sentret is cautious and timid. The Pokédex says it stands tall on its tail to scan wide areas and, when acting as lookout, screeches and hits the ground with its tail to warn others. Packs sleep in shifts: one stands guard and wakes the rest at the first sign of danger.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, and Bulbapedia says it is most common in temperate grasslands. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami, in places such as Kitakami Road, Apple Hills and Mossfell Confluence, and appears in 1★ Tera Raid Battles. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Sentret scratches with Fury Swipes, darts in with Quick Attack and Sucker Punch, and supports allies with Follow Me, Helping Hand and Baton Pass. Its Abilities are Run Away and Keen Eye, with Frisk hidden. With 46 base Attack and only 20 base Speed it is mostly a stepping stone to Furret.

Name origin

Sentret may combine sentry and ferret. The Japanese name is Otachi (オタチ), perhaps from o (tail) plus tachi (standing), or from itachi (weasel).

Design inspiration

Despite the name, Bulbapedia says Sentret's behaviour and markings fit meerkats better than ferrets. It may also share traits with the bake-danuki, a big-bellied yokai linked to the tanuki, as well as with rabbits and flying squirrels. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves into Furret at level 15.

In the games

Sentret lives on Route 29 and Kanto's Route 1 in Gold and Silver, and on Route 43 as well in Crystal. In Scarlet and Violet its Kitakami Pokédex number is 26.

In the anime

In 'Tanks a Lot!', a young Sentret teams up with Misty's Togepi to hijack Team Rocket's Arbo-Tank, and Ash and his friends free them with help from the Sentret's family. Goh caught a Sentret in 'Finding a Legend!' soon after arriving in Ecruteak City.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Sentret is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 215, and a scan of every species in the poke.si data agrees.
  • Bulbapedia says Sentret shares the category Scout Pokémon with Patrat and Hisuian Growlithe.
  • In the anime, the Stadium 2 model and some artwork, Sentret has tanned toes instead of fully brown feet.
