Lore
Biology
Shuppet is a floating sphere, 0.6 m tall and 2.3 kg, that looks as if it is wrapped in grey cloth. Its multicoloured eyes sit inside black rings, a large pink tongue sometimes pokes out, and a long pointed horn rises from the top of its head.
Behaviour
Shuppet is nocturnal, roaming the night for grudges and envy and retreating to its nest at sunrise. Some people are grateful for it, and Bulbapedia says the Sleep Style Dex notes that a Shuppet sleeping near someone eats their dark feelings, so they wake in a better mood.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists an urban habitat, and Bulbapedia says it is most common in cities. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's East Province.
Diet
It feeds on dark emotions such as anger, jealousy, resentment and malice, collected by its horn, which the Pokédex says also make it slowly stronger.
Powers
Shuppet's Abilities are Insomnia and Frisk, with Cursed Body hidden, which can Disable a move that hits it. It learns Night Shade, Will-O-Wisp, Hex, Curse, Shadow Ball and Phantom Force, plus Role Play and Trick for mischief. Base Attack 75 is its best stat, but its Defense of 35 and Special Defense of 33 make it fragile.
Name origin
Shuppet may combine 'shadow' or 'sheet' with 'puppet', or be short for 'shadow puppet'. The Japanese name is Kagebouzu (カゲボウズ), which may blend kage, 'shadow', or kagebōshi, 'silhouette', with teru teru bozu, a Japanese paper charm doll.
Design inspiration
Shuppet looks modelled on a puppet or doll, possibly a hand puppet or a teru teru bozu, which looks like a little ghost. It also resembles common depictions of ghosts as floating cloths with faces.
Evolution notes
Shuppet evolves into Banette at level 37.
In the games
Shuppet haunts Mt. Pyre in Ruby and Sapphire, its first games. In Legends: Z-A it is spread across Lumiose City's districts, in Wild Zones 7 and 15 and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Shuppet debuted in 'Take This House and Shuppet', where Max befriended one living in an abandoned mansion. In 'A Haunted House for Everyone!', Acerola's Shuppet was used to expose the Ghost Pokémon haunting the Pokémon School.
