Lore

Biology

Simisear is a bright red monkey with cream markings, 1.0 m tall and 28 kg. A swirling, flame-like tuft sits on its head, flanked by two smaller tufts, and its fluffy tail swirls like a flame too. White shoulder ruffs look like smoke, and a flame burns inside its body.

Behaviour

When Simisear gets excited, its body heats up and embers drift up from its head and tail.

Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat, and in Black and White it is reached only by evolving Pansear. In Legends: Z-A, Bulbapedia places it in Wild Zone 20, where it is an Alpha Pokémon.

Diet

Sweets.

Powers

Gluttony is its regular Ability and Blaze is hidden. Flame Burst is a move it knows from the start, and TMs add Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Overheat and Focus Blast. With base Attack and Special Attack both at 98 and Speed 101, it can attack from either side.

Name origin

Simisear may combine 'simian' with 'sear' and 'ear'. The Japanese name is Baokkie (バオッキー), which may come from the Chinese bào ('burst'), the English 'burst' and 'monkey'.

Design inspiration

Simisear appears to blend a monkey and a flame, and its patterned midsection, smoke-like ruffs and flame-like tufts also make it look a little like an active volcano. Its big ears suggest 'hear no evil' in the three wise monkeys motif. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Simisear evolves from Pansear when a Fire Stone is used on it, and it does not evolve further.

In the games

In Black and White, where it first appeared, a Fire Stone on Pansear is the only way to get a Simisear. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in Wild Zone 20, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

In the anime

Simisear debuted in 'Emolga and the New Volt Switch!', where a group of Watchog knocked it out of a tree and it took its anger out on Iris's Emolga and Axew and Ash's Oshawott. In 'Search for the Clubultimate!', Getty's Simisear lost to Betty's Simipour in the Clubsplosion.

Fun facts

  • It came last in Pokémon General Election 720, a Japanese poll on what to hand out at showings of the film Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, and it was then given out at Pokémon Stores and Pokémon Centers in Japan from 25 June to 15 July 2016 to mark that result.
  • Black's Pokédex says it loves sweets because they turn into energy for the fire inside it, but Black 2, White 2, Y and Alpha Sapphire drop the reason and say only that it likes them 'for some reason'.
  • It shares its Ember Pokémon category with Fletchinder, and in Japanese both share the category with Charcadet.
