Sliggoo official artwork

Sliggoo is a Dragon-type Pokémon, the Soft Tissue Pokémon, number 705 (#0705) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 17.5 kg.

Sliggoo is a blind Dragon type whose slime, the Pokédex says, can dissolve anything. It steers by four horns that work as a radar, and the swirl on its back holds its brain and organs.

How to pronounce Sliggoo

Sliggoo is pronounced slih-GOO. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Sliggoo is 0.8 m tall and weighs 17.5 kg. It resembles a snail, with a purple body, featureless green eyes, a pair of pale green spots on each cheek and tiny arms. Its gelatinous body forms a spiral lump on its back, and the Pokédex says predators steer clear of its caustic slime.

Behaviour

Sliggoo crawls sluggishly and, the Pokédex says, thinks only of food and escape. It struggles to tell friends from food, so it may calmly try to melt and eat a Pokémon it gets on with. Its eyes have devolved, so it uses its horns as a radar for sounds and smells instead of ears or a nose.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it usually lives in marshlands or near water. In Scarlet and Violet it is found around Casseroya Lake and in Kitakami's Timeless Woods. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Lumiose City's districts, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds the Hisuian form.

Diet

It has no teeth, so the Pokédex says it sprays slime over prey and slurps up what dissolves.

Powers

Sap Sipper and Hydration are its Abilities, with Gooey hidden. Its 113 Special Defense makes it a slow, sturdy wall. Hisuian Sliggoo is Steel and Dragon, 0.7 m and 68.5 kg, with a metal shell it rolls away in; it swaps Hydration for Shell Armor, gaining Defense (83 against 53) but losing Speed (40 against 60).

Name origin

Sliggoo may blend 'slick', 'slimy' or 'slug' with 'goo', and may nod to the Irish sliogán ('shell'). The Japanese name is Numeil (ヌメイル), possibly from numeru ('to be slippery') and 'snail'.

Design inspiration

Sliggoo seems modelled on soft-bodied gastropods like slugs. Bulbapedia says Hisuian Sliggoo is likely a snail, with a metal shell that may come from the scaly-foot gastropod, a deep-sea snail whose shell contains iron sulfide.

Evolution notes

Sliggoo evolves into Goodra at level 50, but only while it rains in the overworld (fog also worked in Generation VII); rain from Rain Dance or Drizzle does not count.

In the games

Hisuian Sliggoo roams Legends: Arceus's Crimson Mirelands and Coronet Highlands, where a researcher guesses iron in the water gave it its metal shell. Sliggoo debuted in X and Y, on Route 19.

In the anime

Sliggoo made its anime debut in 'An Oasis of Hope!', when Ash's Goomy evolved.

Fun facts

  • Moon's Pokédex entry spelled its slime 'mucous', an adjective, where the noun 'mucus' was meant; Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon fixed it.
  • As far as the poke.si data shows, Hisuian Sliggoo and Hisuian Goodra are the only Pokémon that can learn Shelter.
  • Bulbapedia says the code of Legends: Arceus lists Overcoat, not Shell Armor, as Hisuian Sliggoo's second Ability.

Although this Pokémon isn't very strong, its body is coated in a caustic slime that can melt through anything, so predators steer clear of it. (Sword)
