Spoink official artwork

Spoink is a Psychic-type Pokémon, the Bounce Pokémon, number 325 (#0325) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 30.6 kg.

Spoink is the Bounce Pokémon, a psychic piglet that must keep bouncing on its spring-like tail because, the Pokédex says, the shock keeps its heart beating. It balances a Clamperl pearl on its head to boost its psychic power and is forever hunting for a bigger one.

How to pronounce Spoink

Spoink is pronounced SPOYNK. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Spoink is 0.7 m tall and weighs 30.6 kg. It is a grey piglet-like Pokémon with a large nose, small ears, stubby arms and no hind legs, so it gets about on a coiled, spring-like tail. The Pokédex says the pearl on its head comes from a Clamperl and amplifies its psychokinetic powers; without one, Bulbapedia says, it is weakened.

Behaviour

Spoink cannot sit still: the Emerald Pokédex says it keeps bouncing even in its sleep. In the anime it easily mistakes other round objects for its own pearl.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it in mountains, and in Hoenn it is found in Jagged Pass. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province (Area Three) and, with The Teal Mask, Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A the base game offers it only by trade, and it appears in the wild in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

The Emerald Pokédex says it loves mushrooms that grow underground.

Powers

Its Abilities are Thick Fat, which halves Fire and Ice damage, and Own Tempo, which prevents confusion; Gluttony is hidden. It fights with Psybeam, Zen Headbutt and Psychic, and learns Bounce at level 50 in Scarlet and Violet. Special Attack 70 and Special Defense 80 are its best base stats.

Name origin

Spoink may combine 'spring' and 'oink'. The Japanese name is Baneboo (バネブー), which may come from bane ('spring') and būbū, the Japanese oinking sound.

Design inspiration

Spoink seems to be modelled on a piglet. Its pearl may nod to the biblical saying about casting pearls before swine, and its spring to a jack-in-the-box. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Spoink evolves into Grumpig at level 32.

In the games

In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Spoink loses its pearl early in the story and Chatot sends the player to fetch it from Drenched Bluff, and in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire it is the spring that launches the ball. Spoink debuted in Ruby and Sapphire.

In the anime

In 'Pearls are a Spoink's Best Friend', a Spoink with no pearl meets Ash and his friends, who help search for it. In 'Clamperl of Wisdom' it returns a researcher's rare blue pearl, and a friendly Clamperl gives it a pink pearl in thanks.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that a Shiny Spoink's pearl is grey, even though the Pokédex says Spoink's pearl comes from a Clamperl, whose Shiny pearl is gold.
  • Despite the warning that it dies if it stops bouncing, the anime often shows Spoink standing still.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Gym Leaders Tate and Liza both keep a Spoink and use them in a Tag Battle to coach Ruby and Sapphire on Mirage Island.
