Lore

Biology

Swoobat is a blue bat with fused, pointed ears, a pink heart-shaped snout with one nostril and two wide, rounded teeth showing in its lower jaw. Shaggy light-blue fur forms a mane around its neck, its black wings carry a claw at every joint, and its bare pink tail ends in a twisted, two-pronged tip. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 10.5 kg.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says a male Swoobat produces sound waves in courtship that give a positive mood shift to anyone they reach. Making such powerful waves tires it out, so afterwards it cannot fly for a short while. It shakes its tail hard when it sends out waves strong enough to turn concrete to rubble.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Sword and Shield it appears in Max Raid Battles around Galar, and the expansion passes add wandering Swoobat in the Training Lowlands plus Dynamax Adventures. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Swoobat shares Woobat's Abilities. It learns Air Slash, Psychic, Calm Mind and Future Sight, and Attract from the start. With 114 base Speed it is the fastest Flying and Psychic type introduced in Generation V, though its 57 base Attack is low.

Name origin

Swoobat may blend 'swoon' or 'swoop' with 'bat', and its English name contains Woobat just as its Japanese name contains its pre-evolution's. The Japanese name is Kokoromori (ココロモリ), possibly from kokoro (heart) and komori (bat).

Design inspiration

Swoobat appears to be based on one of the New World leaf-nosed bats, and its heart-shaped nose may be a literal take on a heart-nosed bat. Bulbapedia also sees a horseshoe bat in it, and its prominent fangs may nod to vampire bats. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Swoobat evolves from Woobat when levelled up with high friendship.

In the games

Skyla, the Mistralton Gym Leader, has a Swoobat on her team of Flying types in Black and White, its debut games. You can get one by evolving a Woobat.

In the anime

Skyla's Swoobat beat Cilan's Pansage in 'Cilan Takes Flight!' and later beat Ash's Krokorok in 'An Amazing Aerial Battle!' before Tranquill defeated it. Swoobat debuted as a swarm chasing Iris's Emolga in 'Emolga the Irresistible!'.

Fun facts

  • In 'The Four Seasons of Sawsbuck!', Swoobat is shown hanging from its tail as it sleeps.
  • The Pokédex entries disagree about what its sound waves can destroy: rocks in Black, concrete in Black 2, White 2, X and Omega Ruby.
  • Bulbapedia says its nose resembles a rubber stamp, matching its signature move Heart Stamp, which Swoobat learned by levelling up in Generations V to VII but which is missing from its Sword and Shield level-up list.
