Talonflame official artwork

Talonflame is a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon, the Scorching Pokémon, number 663 (#0663) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 24.5 kg.

Talonflame is the Scorching Pokémon, a fire-feathered falcon that, the Pokédex claims, dives onto its prey at up to 500 km/h (310 mph) and lands a huge kick before the victim can escape. It is the last stage of the Fletchling line, and one of the fastest Pokémon of Generation VI.

Lore

Biology

Talonflame looks like a falcon, 1.2 m tall and 24.5 kg, with red-orange plumage on its head, wings and back that tapers into a flame pattern, a grey underside speckled with orange, black wingtips and large yellow talons below shaggy leg feathers. It has a pointed crest, a hooked black beak and black-and-yellow markings round its eyes that look like a mask. The Pokédex says its wings do not burn and that firefighters' outfits were once made from them.

Behaviour

Talonflame is a confident flier. The Scarlet entry says it can fly even while carrying prey heavier than 100 kg (220 lb), and the Pokédex says embers pour out from between its feathers during a fierce battle, which also serves to intimidate opponents.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in South Province (Area Three), Area Zero, in 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles and in The Indigo Disk. In Legends: Z-A it is wild around Lumiose's districts and in Wild Zone 20, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Diet

Mainly other bird Pokémon. The Sun Pokédex lists Wingull and Pikipek as favourites.

Powers

Talonflame finishes with Brave Bird and Flare Blitz, and also learns Acrobatics, Tailwind, Roost and Fly. Its Ability is Flame Body, which can burn attackers that touch it. Its hidden Ability, Gale Wings, is shared only by its own family and gives its Flying moves extra priority. Base Speed 126 is the highest of any Fire type before Mega forms are counted, and with base Attack 81 it is a very quick physical attacker.

Name origin

Talonflame is 'talon' plus 'flame'. The Japanese name is Fiarrow (ファイアロー), possibly from 'fire', 'arrow' and perhaps 'sparrow', as in sparrowhawk.

Design inspiration

Talonflame appears to be modelled on the peregrine falcon, perhaps with touches of the red kite and goshawk. Its Fire typing might nod to 'fire hawks', birds of prey said to start fires on purpose to flush out prey, or to the firebird of Slavic myth. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Fletchinder evolves into Talonflame at level 35.

In the games

In Pokémon UNITE Talonflame was among the first Pokémon you can unlock with a Unite License, and it plays as a melee speedster. It first appeared in X and Y as the last stage of Fletchling's line.

In the anime

Moria's Talonflame debuted in 'Battles in the Sky!', beating a Skarmory and Ash's Hawlucha before losing to a Fletchling that evolved mid-battle. Ash's Fletchinder evolved into a Talonflame in 'A Legendary Photo Op!' while protecting him and his friends from a Moltres.

Fun facts

  • Before Fletchinder was introduced on X and Y's release date, the official Pokémon website had stated that Talonflame evolves directly from Fletchling.
  • In the Pokémon Generations episode 'The Redemption', a soldier's Talonflame fights in a war that raged across Kalos 3,000 years earlier.
  • In Pokémon UNITE it begins as Fletchling, becomes Fletchinder at level 5 and Talonflame at level 7.
