Lore

Biology

Fletchling is a robin-like bird, 0.3 m tall and 1.7 kg, with a reddish-orange head, a yellow triangle behind each eye, a grey body and white-tipped wings. Its long black tail ends in two points with a feather at each side of the base, like the feathers on the end of an arrow.

Behaviour

Fletchling is amiable and easy to train, and the X entry says it signals to others of its kind with chirps and tail-feather movements. In battle it is ferocious, and the Pokédex says it is merciless to anything that enters its territory. The Violet entry says it once fought huge territorial disputes with Squawkabilly in Paldea.

Habitat

The Violet Pokédex says Fletchling turn up in the countryside and in towns alike. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province and The Indigo Disk, and in Legends: Z-A across Lumiose's districts, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Powers

Fletchling pecks with Peck, Quick Attack and Ember, then learns Acrobatics, Aerial Ace and Fly. Its Ability is Big Pecks, which stops its Defense from being lowered, and its hidden Ability is Gale Wings. At this stage it is a fragile scout.

Name origin

Fletchling may combine 'fletching', the feathers on an arrow, with 'fledgling' or 'hatchling'. The Japanese name is Yayakoma (ヤヤコマ), possibly from ya ('arrow'), yayako ('baby') and komadori ('Japanese robin').

Design inspiration

Saya Tsuruta designed Fletchling. It appears to be modelled on a Japanese robin, and its tail and name suggest an arrow as well, which is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Fletchling evolves into Fletchinder at level 17, and Fletchinder evolves into Talonflame at level 35. Bulbapedia notes that, among regional bird Pokémon, only this line changes its primary type when it evolves, from Normal to Fire.

In the games

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and in Ultimate, Fletchling can be summoned from a Poké Ball to peck opponents. It first appeared in X and Y, where it is found on Routes 2 and 3 and in Santalune Forest.

In the anime

Grace's Fletchling wakes Serena up in the first episode, 'Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!'. Ash's Fletchling debuted in 'A Battle of Aerial Mobility!' after stealing a Berry meant for a Dedenne, and Ash caught it after several battles using his Froakie.

Fun facts

  • It is the lightest and shortest Normal type and Flying type introduced in Generation VI.
  • In the short 'Flying in the Air' from Hoopa's Surprise Ring Adventures, three Fletchling summoned by Hoopa make so much wind with a combined Gust that it sends them blasting off.
  • A Fletchling that has Terastallized into a Fire type appears in an image in the episode 'Welcome to Naranja Academy!'.
