Diggersby official artwork

Diggersby is a Normal/Ground-type Pokémon, the Digging Pokémon, number 660 (#0660) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 42.4 kg.

Diggersby has ears as powerful as an excavator: the Pokédex says they can lift boulders of a ton or more and reduce dense bedrock to rubble. It is a rabbit built like heavy machinery, and a big help on building sites.

Lore

Biology

Diggersby is a plump grey rabbit, 1.0 m tall and 42.4 kg. Its two ears look like muscular arms ending in three-fingered brown paws, with a pointed elbow-like bump in the middle. A band of thick woolly fur circles its waist, and the Pokédex says it holds heat so well that people once made heavy winter clothing from the fur it shed. Its brown muzzle looks like stubble and its eyes seem permanently narrowed.

Behaviour

Diggersby is a worker with a lazy streak. Its digging is a huge help on construction sites, especially tunnels, and the Pokédex says that once it has finished it lounges lazily.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat beyond construction and digging sites. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in Wild Zones 17 and 20, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Powers

Diggersby digs with Dig, Bulldoze and Earthquake and hits with Hammer Arm and Super Fang, while Swords Dance sharpens its Attack. Its Abilities are Pickup and Cheek Pouch, which restores HP when it eats a Berry, with Huge Power hidden, which doubles its Attack. With base HP 85 and Attack of only 56, that hidden Ability is what turns a sturdy digger into a hard hitter.

Name origin

Diggersby may combine 'digger' and 'bunny', with '-by' echoing Bunnelby. The Japanese name is Horudo (ホルード), possibly from horu ('to dig') or 'hole' and do ('soil') or to ('rabbit').

Design inspiration

Diggersby is based on a rabbit and seems to borrow from excavators: its ears act as digging arms and their brown tips resemble excavated dirt. Its lazy rests, stubble and woolly waist band may nod to construction workers and to the haramaki, a belly warmer that Japanese media often links with middle-aged men. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Bunnelby evolves into Diggersby at level 20, gaining the Ground type.

In the games

In Sword and Shield Diggersby appears in Max Raid Battles. It first appeared in X and Y, where it can be found on Route 22 and in the Ground Friend Safari.

In the anime

Dolan's Diggersby debuted in 'To Catch a Pokémon Smuggler!', where it overpowered Ash's Froakie despite a type disadvantage while helping Dolan with his poaching. By 'The Future is Now, Thanks to Strategy!' Clemont's Bunnelby has turned out to be a Diggersby.
