Tandemaus is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Couple Pokémon, number 924 (#0924) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1.8 kg.

Tandemaus is the Couple Pokémon, and it is really two mice that live and fight as one: they split every scrap of food exactly in half, eat it together and never leave each other's side. Its gender is unknown.

Lore

Biology

Tandemaus is a pair of small white rodents that walk upright. The Pokédex height is 0.3 m and weight 1.8 kg. Each has a round head, large ears, tiny black eyes and a long tail that curls to a bulb at the tip. A light grey patch makes one look as if it wears a shirt and the other as if it wears trousers.

Behaviour

The two stick together no matter what. The Scarlet Pokédex says they work as a team, using their incisors to cut useful material for a nest out of almost anything and then making off with it. The Violet Pokédex says they share any food they find in exact halves.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's East Province, parts of the West Province and around the Pokémon League, and in Kitakami in The Teal Mask, as well as in 2-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Its Abilities are Run Away and Pickup, with Own Tempo hidden. Its signature move is Population Bomb, learned at level 46, and no Pokémon other than Tandemaus and Maushold can learn it. Helping Hand at level 8 suits a Pokémon that always works as a pair. Its best base stat is Speed, 75.

Name origin

Tandemaus may combine 'tandem' with Maus, German for 'mouse'. The Japanese name is Wakkanezumi (ワッカネズミ), possibly from wakka ('loop') and nezumi ('mouse').

Design inspiration

Megumi Mizutani designed Tandemaus and Maushold. Tandemaus looks like two mice working as one, and Bulbapedia says its doll-like look resembles dollhouse figures such as Sylvanian Families, a Japanese doll line. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Tandemaus evolves into Maushold from level 25, but only when it levels up in a battle.

In the games

Tandemaus can be caught wild in Paldea and Kitakami in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared. A Pokémon Center Birthday Tandemaus was distributed from 1 November 2024 to 31 January 2026. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Tandemaus only makes minor appearances in Pokémon Horizons, such as a Student's Tandemaus in 'Terastallization vs. Mega Evolution!' and a picture of one on Liko's Rotom Phone in 'The SOS is from Tandemaus?'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says a pre-release trailer on 6 October 2022 briefly showed Tandemaus next to Nacli and Squawkabilly, though it stayed officially unrevealed until the games launched.
  • Bulbapedia notes that if Tandemaus reaches level 25 in a fight where it was not sent out, the evolution animation never plays and the evolution cannot be cancelled.
  • Because it needs a battle level-up, Tandemaus can get stuck at level 100, now that Rare Candy can trigger evolution there; Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon has this problem.
