Maushold official artwork

Maushold is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Family Pokémon, number 925 (#0925) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2.8 kg.

Maushold is the Family Pokémon: a group of three or four mice in which a larger pair protects one or two small ones that, as far as anyone knows, simply appeared one day. Nobody is sure the family is actually related.

How to pronounce Maushold

Lore

Biology

Maushold is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2.8 kg in its usual form. The larger pair look just like Tandemaus. The small ones have no grey patches, shorter tails and stubbier limbs, and they hide behind the pair, holding on to their tail tips as they walk.

Behaviour

Per the Violet Pokédex, the bigger pair shields the small ones in battle, but the whole group piles in against strong opponents. Maushold build huge nests with many rooms for different jobs, such as eating and sleeping. Where the small ones come from is a mystery.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it has no wild spawns: it comes from evolving Tandemaus, including in The Teal Mask, or from 4-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Its Abilities are Friend Guard, which cuts the damage its allies take in Double Battles, and Cheek Pouch, with Technician hidden. It has a Family of Three form and a Family of Four form, which differ in the number of mice, weight (2.3 kg for the smaller family) and cry. Evolving Tandemaus has a 1 in 100 chance of giving Family of Three. Base Speed 111 makes it a fast supporting attacker.

Name origin

Maushold may combine Maus, German for 'mouse', with 'household', or pun on 'mouse hole'. The Japanese name is Ikkanezumi (イッカネズミ), probably from ikka ('family') and nezumi ('mouse').

Design inspiration

Maushold looks like a mouse family. Bulbapedia suggests laboratory mice, because of the white fur and the nests with dedicated rooms, and the nuclear family for the two forms. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Maushold evolves from Tandemaus at level 25 when it levels up in battle.

In the games

Maushold is the family's final form, and it first appeared in Scarlet and Violet. Its form in Tera Raids is fixed: Family of Three in 4-star raids and Family of Four in 6-star raids. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A Family of Four Maushold debuted in the Pokémon Horizons episode 'The SOS is from Tandemaus?', where it was mistaken for a Tandemaus until its two little ones were found, and it joined the Pokémon who live on the Brave Olivine. 'The Catcher in the Sky' revealed that Mollie had caught it.

Fun facts

  • Maushold is the only Pokémon with Friend Guard as a regular Ability; every other Pokémon that has it keeps it hidden.
  • Bulbapedia says Family of Three is rarer and has no official key artwork, yet the Scarlet and Violet code lists it as the primary form, and Maushold's logo for the franchise's 30th anniversary shows it.
  • Before the Version 2.0.1 update of Scarlet and Violet, Maushold could not learn Baton Pass by TM, though Tandemaus could.
