Lore
Biology
Tauros is a light-brown bull, 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) tall and 88.4 kg (194.9 lb), with a thick dark mane, a hump on its shoulders, curved grey horns and three black tails. Every Tauros is male.
Behaviour
A rowdy, violent Pokémon, Tauros lashes its sides with its tails to wind itself up, a warning that a charge is coming. The Pokédex says it is only content while rampaging, and with no opponent it flattens thick trees to calm down. In herds, the protector is proud of its battle-scarred horns, and members lock horns to prove their strength. Tauros in Alola are calmer, and riding them is said to have started there, while the Pokédex says Galar's will not allow riders.
Habitat
Tauros lives in herds on grasslands and plains. In Scarlet and Violet the Paldean breeds roam the East and West Provinces and the Asado Desert, and Kantonian Tauros appears in the Indigo Disk's Savanna Biome. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Intimidate, which lowers foes' Attack on entry, and Anger Point, which maxes Attack after a critical hit; the Hidden Ability is Sheer Force. Horn Attack, Zen Headbutt and Thrash suit its charging style, and with base Speed 110 it is a quick physical attacker. Paldean Tauros are dark grey with a black mane: Combat Breed is Fighting, Blaze Breed is Fighting and Fire, and Aqua Breed is Fighting and Water. Bulbapedia says Raging Bull, which takes on the breed's type, is known only to Tauros.
Name origin
Tauros may come from its Japanese name and from Greek tauros, 'bull'. The Japanese name is Kentauros (ケンタロス), which may come from the Greek kentauros, 'centaur'.
Design inspiration
Shigeki Morimoto designed Tauros, and James Turner designed the three Paldean forms. Tauros looks modelled on a bull or bison, and its tails may recall a cat o' nine tails. The Paldean forms likely draw on Spain's fighting bulls, with the fiery and watery breeds perhaps echoing bull festivals in Valencia. These are fan readings.
In the games
In Sun and Moon, Tauros works as a Poké Ride Pokémon that carries the player around Alola. A Generation I original, it was a Safari Zone catch in Red and Blue, and in Scarlet and Violet Blaze Breed is exclusive to Scarlet and Aqua Breed to Violet.
In the anime
In the Safari Zone, Ash caught 30 Tauros at once, and the herd stampeded through Professor Oak's lab in the English dub's 'Showdown at the Po-ké Corral'.
Fun facts
- In the computer game Pokémon Play It!, the Tauros card makes the program shut down or freeze, according to Bulbapedia.
- In Sun and Moon's Heahea City, Game Freak's Morimoto sees a Tauros carrying a Game Boy origin mark and remarks that it was once among the strongest Pokémon of the Generation I games, partly thanks to Blizzard.
- In the original Red and Green, its Pokédex entry wrongly said it has two tails, fixed to three in FireRed.
