Lore

Biology

Throh is 1.3 m tall and 55.5 kg, with a bulky red body, rocky skin and a T-shaped black nose and brow. It wears a white judogi with diamond patterns on the sleeves and a black belt, which wild Throh weave from vines. The Pokédex says the belt grows darker as it soaks up sweat.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says tightening its belt makes Throh stronger, that its throwing technique is first-rate, and that it changes belts as it grows more powerful.

Habitat

In Black and White it is found on Routes 10, 15 and 18 and outside Pinwheel Forest. In X and Y it appears in the Fighting-type Friend Safari.

Powers

Its Abilities are Guts and Inner Focus, with Mold Breaker hidden. It learns the throwing moves Circle Throw, Storm Throw, Vital Throw and Seismic Toss, along with Revenge and Superpower. Its 120 HP, 85 Defense and 85 Special Defense make it a sturdy fighter.

Name origin

Throh may come from 'throw'. The Japanese name is Nageki (ナゲキ), possibly from nageru ('to throw'), geki (a strike) and ki ('demon').

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Throh and Sawk, and told Nintendo Dream that Throh draws on throwing martial arts, notably judo. Bulbapedia suggests it may also nod to namahage, demons in oni masks, with a judogi in place of the straw cloak.

In the games

In Sword and Shield, Throh is wild in Shield, while Sword players get one by trading a Vanillish in Circhester. It first appeared in Black and White. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Montgomery's Throh debuted in 'The Clubsplosion Begins!' and went on to beat three rivals' Pokémon in turn: Delbert's Mienshao, then Iris's Excadrill, then Ash's Scraggy. Stephan's Sawk finally stopped it in 'Commanding the Clubsplosion Crown!'. In 'A Close Call... Practically!' James pulled a Throh from the Rocket Prize Master.

Fun facts

  • Throh and Sawk both had horns at one stage, perhaps hinting at oni, but the horns became eyebrows to avoid overlap with Tornadus and Thundurus, which were originally planned in red and blue as well.
  • Bulbapedia says Throh grew out of a design left over from Diamond and Pearl that was never used.
  • In the anime and in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, Throh stands a little above Sawk, although the Pokédex lists it as 10 cm shorter.
