Lore

Biology

Seismitoad is 1.5 m tall and 62 kg, a bulky aquamarine toad with red eyes, cyan bumps edged in black, three bulbous digits on each hand and foot, and a long tongue. The lumps on its head fire a paralysing liquid, and the ones on its fists vibrate to add power to its punches.

Behaviour

Seismitoad vibrates the bumps all over its body to torment opponents and to cause earthquake-like tremors. Bulbapedia notes it is known to wield venom.

Habitat

In Black and White it turns up on Route 8, in Icirrus City and at the Moor of Icirrus, surfing in rippling water. In Sword and Shield it lives on Route 7 and around Axew's Eye and the Lake of Outrage.

Powers

Its Abilities are Swift Swim and Poison Touch, with Water Absorb hidden. It learns Muddy Water, Hyper Voice and Hydro Pump by level, plus Earthquake, Drain Punch and Poison Jab by TM. HP 105 with Attack 95 and Special Attack 85 make it a balanced bruiser.

Name origin

Seismitoad may combine 'seismic' and 'toad'. The Japanese name is Gamageroge (ガマゲロゲ), possibly from gama (toad) and gerogero, the sound of a frog croaking.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia cites Ken Sugimori in Nintendo Dream saying Seismitoad is based on the Japanese common toad, and that after the Poliwag line he wanted a more traditional frog-like evolution. Its paralysing head bumps may echo the Cuyaba dwarf frog, whose rear carries big eye-like bumps that ooze poison, and its vibration-boosted punches may reference resonance.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Palpitoad at level 36 and is the final form of Tympole.

In the games

Seismitoad is wild in Sword and Shield, where the Crown Tundra's Max Lair Dynamax Adventures also include it, after debuting in Black and White. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Seismitoad made its series debut in 'Battling the Bully!' as a Pokémon lent by Sean's father, and lost to Ash's Pikachu and a Krokorok. In 'The Clubsplosion Begins!' Edmund's Seismitoad nearly gained the upper hand over Stephan's Sawk thanks to Swift Swim before Low Sweep injured its leg.
