Ting-Lu

Ting-Lu is a Dark/Ground-type Pokémon, the Ruinous Pokémon, number 1003 (#1003) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 2.7 m tall and weighs 699.7 kg.
Ting-Lu is a hulking deer of layered rock wearing a cracked ritual vessel on its head, and the Pokédex says that slowly lowering that head onto the ground splits the earth with fissures roughly 50 m (over 160 ft) deep.

Lore
Biology
Ting-Lu stands 2.7 m tall and weighs 699.7 kg. It has a humped back of stacked rock in browns and tans, red markings on its head and small red eyes. The cracked vessel on its head has an ornate pattern like eyes on the front and antler-like spikes round the rim. The Scarlet Pokédex says fear soaked into an ancient ritual vessel, which then took on rocks and dirt as a body; Bulbapedia treats the vessel as the true Pokémon.
Behaviour
Ting-Lu is slow and enormously heavy. The one behaviour the Pokédex records is that it brings its exceedingly heavy head down onto the ground bit by bit, and that alone is enough to open huge cracks in the earth. Its entries mention no hostility or friendliness, only that it was born from fear.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no natural habitat. In Paldea it is sealed in the Groundblight Shrine, on the Socarrat Trail.
Powers
Its Ability Vessel of Ruin lowers the Special Attack of every other Pokémon in battle. Its base HP of 155 is the highest of any Ground type, and with 125 Defense and moves such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, Whirlwind and Earthquake it works as a bulky hazard setter that can also hit back with 110 Attack.
Name origin
Ting-Lu may combine dǐng (an ancient Chinese cauldron) and lù (deer). The Japanese name is Dinlu (ディンルー), which may be built from the same two words.
Design inspiration
The head vessel looks like a dǐng, a cauldron that symbolised imperial authority, while the body seems based on deer such as the moose and Père David's deer, perhaps with the huge antlers of the extinct Irish elk in mind. Bulbapedia notes that cauldron and deer together could nod to two Chinese phrases about contesting for a throne, and that Ting-Lu may correspond to Tāotiè, a gluttonous bronze-vessel beast among the Four Perils. These are fan readings.
In the games
Ting-Lu is one of the four treasures of ruin that you can challenge in Scarlet and Violet once its shrine is unsealed, and you can catch only one per save file. In Pokémon Masters EX it forms a sync pair with Maxie. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
In the Pokémon Horizons episode HZ153, Coral and Sidian break the Groundblight Shrine's seal by accident, and Ting-Lu comes out to face them and Ult.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia says the treasures of ruin were the first Pokémon to have their base stats changed by a patch; Ting-Lu lost 10 base HP and 5 base Defense but gained 5 base Special Attack.
- Bulbapedia suggests its stocky, stone-layered body may also recall the verracos, carved stone animals found in north-western Iberia, the real-world area its Groundblight Shrine corresponds to.
- Among Generation IX Dark types it is the heaviest, the tallest and the slowest.
