Togedemaru, the Roly-Poly Pokémon, is a hedgehog-like Electric and Steel creature that curls into a spiky ball and draws lightning to itself on purpose. The Pokédex says it makes little electricity of its own, so it lets lightning strike it to charge up.

Lore

Biology

Togedemaru is a round, rodent-like Pokémon, 0.3 m (1'00") tall and 3.3 kg (7.3 lb), white at the front and grey on the back, with 14 fur spikes and a yellow lightning-bolt needle on its head. The Pokédex says its long back hairs act as lightning rods, with the bolts stored in an electric sac.

Behaviour

In trouble, the Pokédex says, Togedemaru curls into a ball, raises its spikes and discharges electricity at random. Bulbapedia says groups gather on stormy days to be struck by lightning, and that it rolls about when pleased. It tries to steal Elekid's electricity, usually ending in an even match.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; in Sun and Moon it is found on Blush Mountain. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Iron Barbs hurts attackers that touch it, Lightning Rod pulls Electric moves its way and turns them into extra Special Attack, and the hidden Sturdy stops a one-hit knockout from full HP. Zing Zap was its signature move in Generation VII. A base Attack of 98 and Speed of 96 make it a fast, hard-hitting attacker.

Name origin

Togedemaru keeps its Japanese name worldwide, トゲデマル (Togedemaru). Bulbapedia reads it as toge ('thorn') plus denki ('electricity') and maru ('round'), with a pun on the phrase 'spiny and round'.

Design inspiration

Togedemaru looks like a hedgehog, since it curls into a spiky ball, and may also borrow from porcupines, chinchillas and the Ryūkyū spiny rat. With its spines out, marks on its cheeks can look like electrical outlets, North American and Japanese ones alike. These are fan readings.

In the games

A Totem Togedemaru with a golden Z-Power aura guards Sophocles's trial at Hokulani Observatory in Sun and Moon, where the species debuted, and the prize is an Electrium Z. In Sword and Shield it lives around the Lake of Outrage and turns up in Max Raid Battles.

In the anime

Sophocles's Togedemaru debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!'. Bulbapedia describes her as energetic and playful, devoted to Ash's Pikachu, and often out of her Poké Ball.

  • Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon also have a Togedemaru called Togemaru at the Hokulani Observatory, which uses Lightning Rod to shield Sophocles's Charjabug during your trial.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it is a Poké Ball summon that calls lightning down on itself to fire off sparks.
