Lore
Biology
Tyranitar is a large, upright, dinosaur-like Pokémon in green armour-like hide, 2.0 m tall and 202 kg. Spikes of different sizes run along its head, neck and shoulders, triangular holes pierce its chest, back and knees, and a grey diamond of scales covers its belly. Its tail ends in a ring of spikes. The Pokédex claims no attack can harm its body.
Behaviour
Tyranitar is insolent and uncaring of others, wandering the mountains in search of fights while ignoring any opponent it judges unworthy. Bulbapedia says it nests in the ruins of mountains it has demolished, and in Galar it keeps up a bitter feud with Duraludon, which lives in the same mountains. In Pokémon Sleep it dozes with its limbs spread wide.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it roams the mountains. In Scarlet it comes from evolving Pupitar or from 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids, and Violet players must trade for it.
Powers
Tyranitar's Ability Sand Stream whips up a sandstorm as it enters battle, and its hidden Ability Unnerve stops opponents eating held Berries. It hits with Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Crunch, Earthquake and Dark Pulse. Holding Tyranitarite, it Mega Evolves into a Rock and Dark type of 2.5 m and 255 kg whose back splits open under the power; its base Attack climbs from 134 to 164 and Defense from 110 to 150, and the Pokédex says it may not even hear its Trainer.
Name origin
Tyranitar may come from 'tyrant' or Tyrannosaurus, which share a root. The Japanese name is Bangiras (バンギラス), which may combine 野蛮 yaban ('savage') or 蛮 ban ('barbarian') with the dinosaur suffix 'saurus'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Tyranitar's upright posture may nod to the kaiju genre, where monsters are humanoid so a performer can fit inside, and it may also draw on the armadillo girdled lizard or on certain theropod dinosaurs. Mega Tyranitar's split back and green colouring may suggest an insect emerging from its cocoon. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Tyranitar evolves from Pupitar at level 55 and is the final stage of its line.
In the games
In Pokémon Ranger Billy of the Go-Rock Quads uses a Tyranitar to try to stop you, backed by a Larvitar and a Pupitar. It debuted in Gold and Silver. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team it belongs to the rescue team A.C.T. In Legends: Z-A it is an Alpha Pokémon in Centrico Plaza's Wild Zone 20, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Tyranitar debuted in the film 'Celebi: The Voice of the Forest', where the Iron-Masked Marauder uses one caught in a Dark Ball. In the series proper it first shows up in 'Address Unown', as a Larvitar's memory of the Tyranitar mother it was parted from.
