Tyrogue official artwork

Tyrogue is a Fighting-type Pokémon, the Scuffle Pokémon, number 236 (#0236) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 21 kg.

Tyrogue is the Scuffle Pokémon, a baby Fighting type so eager to fight that it challenges anyone, however big, and keeps training after every loss. Which fighter it grows into depends on its stats rather than a stone or friendship.

Lore

Biology

Tyrogue is a small, pale purple humanoid, 0.7 m tall and 21 kg, with brown hips and feet that look like shorts and shoes. It has three blunt bumps on its head, yellow eyes, round pads on the sides of its head and white bandage-like bands on its torso and wrists. It is a male-only species.

Behaviour

Tyrogue never stops fighting. The Pokédex warns that it will punch any target within reach without warning, so it is often nursing injuries from fights with bigger foes. It gets stressed if it cannot train every day, so a Trainer needs a regular schedule, and Bulbapedia says its training influences which fighter it becomes.

Habitat

Its Pokédex habitat is Urban, and Bulbapedia says it is usually found in cities. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or transfer, then appears in the Indigo Disk's Terarium, including 1-star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Guts boosts its Attack when it has a status condition, Steadfast raises its Speed when it flinches and the hidden Vital Spirit prevents sleep. In Scarlet and Violet its only level-up moves are Tackle, Focus Energy, Fake Out and Helping Hand. Every base stat is 35, a total of 210, the lowest of any Fighting type.

Name origin

Tyrogue may blend 'tyro' (a beginner) or 'tyke' with 'rogue', and Bulbapedia says it could also nod to the boxer Mike Tyson. The Japanese name is Balkie (バルキー), which may be a corruption of 'bulky' and may also involve 'battle' and 'rookie'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Tyrogue appears to draw on wrestlers: the patterns on its body resemble a school wrestling team's uniform, and its head is shaped like the headgear that protects wrestlers' ears. This is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

At level 20 Tyrogue turns into Hitmonlee when its Attack beats its Defense, Hitmonchan when its Defense is the larger stat, and Hitmontop when the two match. In Pokémon GO the choice depends on its highest IV instead.

In the games

Kiyo gives you a Tyrogue in Mt. Mortar in Gold and Silver, where it debuted. In FireRed and LeafGreen you can instead get one by breeding a Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee.

In the anime

Tyrogue debuted in 'A Tyrogue Full of Trouble' as an abandoned Pokémon on Mt. Mortar that led a gang of Mankey and Primeape, until the Black Belt Kiyo won its trust.

Fun facts

  • The game data shows no other baby Pokémon has six equal base stats.
  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo it appears to be based on a different design called Gongu, which evolved into the Hitmons at level 15.
  • Bulbapedia says Tyrogue is the only Pokémon that joined two previously unrelated Pokémon into one evolutionary line.
