Lore

Biology

Hitmonchan is a tan Pokémon with a humanoid build, 1.4 m tall and 50.2 kg. It wears what looks like a light purple tunic and skirt, with red boxing gloves and purple boxing shoes, and has five blunt bumps on top of its head. Bulbapedia says the gloves are really masses of muscle. It is a male-only species.

Behaviour

In battle it hits a foe with a flurry of punches from both sides, then ends it with one straight punch at over 480 km/h (300 mph). It spins its arms before impact and can drill through concrete with corkscrew punches. It has an unbreakable spirit, yet the Pokédex says it needs a break after three minutes of fighting.

Habitat

Its Pokédex habitat is Urban, and Bulbapedia says it is usually found in urban areas. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or transfer, then appears in the Indigo Disk's Terarium, including 5-star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Keen Eye stops its accuracy being lowered, Iron Fist strengthens punching moves and the hidden Inner Focus prevents flinching. Its punches include Mach Punch, Bullet Punch, Drain Punch, Mega Punch and Focus Punch, and it learns Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Thunder Punch at level 24. With 105 Attack and 110 Special Defense it hits hard, but its Speed is only 76.

Name origin

Hitmonchan may combine 'hit' and 'monster'; Bulbapedia says Bill Giese suggested the English name. The Japanese name is Ebiwalar (エビワラー), which may come from Hiroyuki Ebihara, a Japanese world champion boxer.

Evolution notes

Tyrogue becomes Hitmonchan at level 20 when its Defense stat beats its Attack, which is odd, since Hitmonchan's own Attack (105) ends up far above its Defense (79).

In the games

In Pokopia, Ditto befriends Hitmonchan in the Withered Wasteland, and it teaches Ditto Rock Smash. In the Let's Go games it can also be found on Victory Road.

In the anime

Hitmonchan debuted in 'The Punchy Pokémon' as Anthony's entry in the P1 Grand Prix. Goh's Hitmonchan, a gift from the Karate Master in 'Solitary and Menacing!', appears again later in Pokémon Journeys.

Fun facts

  • In the Red and Green beta its English name was Chan.
  • Bulbapedia suggests its Pokédex number, 107, could nod to Little Mac, a boxer who weighs 49 kg (107 lb).
  • In its original Red and Green artwork it wore purple pants like pleated shorts, and since the 3D models of Generation VI it has worn kilt-like bottoms with undergarments.
