Lore

Biology

Lickitung is a round, bipedal Pokémon, 1.2 m tall and 65.5 kg, with soft pink skin, curved yellow marks across its belly and a yellow band round each knee. It has a thick tail, a single claw on each hand and a long tongue that can grip things, with nerves running to the tip. Bulbapedia says the tongue is over 2 m (6 ft 6 in) long and likely connected to the tail, which twitches when the tongue is pulled.

Behaviour

Lickitung checks out whatever is around it by licking it, because it memorises things by texture and taste, and it is put off by sour things. Its sticky saliva leaves a tingle on whatever it touches.

Habitat

Its Pokédex habitat is Grassland, and Bulbapedia says it lives on grassy plains and meadows. It cannot be found in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A, but it appears in Legends: Arceus and in Sword and Shield's Expansion Pass areas.

Diet

The Pokédex says Bug Pokémon are its main food: it paralyses prey with a lick, then swallows them whole.

Powers

Own Tempo prevents confusion, Oblivious prevents infatuation and the hidden Cloud Nine negates the effects of weather. It learns Rollout early, then Wrap, Stomp, Knock Off and Power Whip. With 90 base HP it is bulky, but its Speed is only 30.

Name origin

Lickitung is a blend of 'lick' and 'tongue'. The Japanese name is Beroringa (ベロリンガ), which may come from berori ('licking') and possibly the Latin lingua, 'tongue'.

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Lickitung. Bulbapedia says it may be based on lungless salamanders or chameleons, and perhaps the Akaname, a Japanese yōkai with a gigantic tongue that licks filth from bathhouses. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves into Lickilicky when it levels up while knowing Rollout, which it learns at level 6 in Sword and Shield. That evolution only arrived in Generation IV.

In the games

Lickitung has been around since Generation I, and its Legends: Arceus Pokédex entry says its saliva, collected and boiled down, makes a strong adhesive. In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! it cannot evolve, because Lickilicky is not in those games.

In the anime

Jessie caught a Lickitung in 'Princess vs. Princess' and used it against Misty, before accidentally trading it for Wobbuffet in 'Tricks of the Trade'. Ulu's Lickitung first appears in person in 'Sours for the Sweet!', sorting sour Grepa Berries from sweet ones for the Alola Bread Festival.

Fun facts

  • Despite its name, Lickitung could not learn Lick before Generation II.
  • In the Red and Green beta its English name was Tonguetyd.
  • In Goldenrod Tunnel, a Poké Maniac says his Pokémon just had a haircut, yet his only Pokémon is a Lickitung.

Pokédex entries

Wields its long tongue deftly, as though it were an arm. The Pokémon's viscous saliva, once it has been collected and boiled down, yields a strong and highly useful adhesive. (Legends: Arceus)

Bug Pokémon are Lickitung's main food source. This Pokémon paralyzes its prey with a lick from its long tongue, then swallows the prey whole. (Shield)

If this Pokémon's sticky saliva gets on you and you don't clean it off, an intense itch will set in. The itch won't go away, either. (Sword)

Its tongue spans almost seven feet and moves more freely than its forelegs. Its licks can cause paralysis. (Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

It licks filth clean with its tongue. Whatever it licks always stinks afterward, so whether it's really clean is...questionable. (Ultra Moon)

It checks out whatever's around it by licking everything. If you don't clean off a spot where it's licked you, you'll break out in a rash! (Ultra Sun)
