Lore

Biology

Koffing is a spherical purple Pokémon, 0.6 m tall and 1 kg, with vacant eyes, a wide mouth and a cream skull-and-crossbones mark below its face. Geyser-like holes across its body release a mustard-coloured gas. Its skin is so thin that the gases swirling inside show through, and over-inflation can make it burst.

Behaviour

Koffing brews poison gas by mixing toxins with garbage, and the Pokédex says it makes more as the temperature rises. The fumes cause sniffles, coughs and teary eyes, and being lighter than air they keep Koffing afloat. When agitated it makes its gas more toxic and jets it out, and the Pokédex warns it may overinflate and explode.

Habitat

Its Pokédex habitat is Urban, and a Shield Pokédex entry says some claim it used to be more plentiful in Galar. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in The Teal Mask at Crystal Pool, Infernal Pass and Oni Mountain; Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says it seeks out the fumes of raw, rotting rubbish in dumps and polluted air.

Powers

Levitate lets it float above Ground moves, and Neutralizing Gas switches off every other Pokémon's Ability while it is in battle; Bulbapedia knows of no other Pokémon besides Koffing and Weezing that can have it. Its hidden Ability is Stench. It attacks with Smog, Sludge Bomb and Belch, and can use Self-Destruct and Explosion. Its 95 base Defense is sturdy for its size.

Name origin

Koffing may be a corruption of 'coughing'. The Japanese name is Dogars (ドガース), which may come from doku-gasu, 'poison gas'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Koffing may be based on a floating naval mine or a living meteorite, and on smog and other air pollution. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Koffing evolves into Weezing at level 35, or into Galarian Weezing if it reaches level 35 in Galar.

In the games

In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, a Koffing belongs to Team Skull alongside Zubat and their leader Skuntank, and the same Koffing is the boss of Beach Cave. Koffing is one of the original Generation I Pokémon.

In the anime

James's Koffing debuted in 'Pokémon Emergency!' and was his signature Pokémon until it evolved in 'Dig Those Diglett!'. Roxie's Koffing beat Ash's Boldore and Unfezant in 'Rocking the Virbank Gym! Part 1'.

Fun facts

  • In the Red and Green beta its English name was Ny, a reference to the air pollution of New York City.
  • Before Generation VIII, Levitate was the only Ability Koffing could have.
  • In an anime exam question, Koffing was said to have first been discovered in a public bathhouse, but a Team Rocket trading card says it was a weapons factory.

Pokédex entries

It adores polluted air. Some claim that Koffing used to be more plentiful in the Galar region than they are now. (Shield)

Its body is full of poisonous gas. It floats into garbage dumps, seeking out the fumes of raw, rotting trash. (Sword)

In hot places, its internal gases could expand and explode without any warning. Be very careful! (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

Koffing embodies toxic substances. It mixes the toxins with raw garbage to set off a chemical reaction that results in a terribly powerful poison gas. The higher the temperature, the more gas is concocted by this Pokémon. (Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)

If Koffing becomes agitated, it raises the toxicity of its internal gases and jets them out from all over its body. This Pokémon may also overinflate its round body, then explode. (Ruby, Omega Ruby)

Lighter-than-air gases in its body keep it aloft. The gases not only smell, they are also explosive. (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, White, Y)
