Weezing official artwork

Weezing is a Poison-type Pokémon, the Poison Gas Pokémon, number 110 (#0110) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 9.5 kg.

Weezing is the Poison Gas Pokémon, two fused heads that inflate and deflate in turn to mix their toxic gases. In Galar it takes a Poison and Fairy form that wears chimney-pot hats and puffs out clean air.

Lore

Biology

Weezing is a purple Pokémon of two unequal spherical heads joined by a thin tube, 1.2 m tall and 9.5 kg. The bigger head has heavy eyebrows and a skull-and-crossbones mark. The Pokédex says it forms when two Koffing fuse over many years, and, very rarely, a sudden mutation joins two Koffing in a short time.

Behaviour

Each head holds a different toxin, and Weezing mixes them by inflating one head while deflating the other, which makes the gas more toxic and smellier. The Pokédex says it settles in dirty, untidy houses and rummages through the rubbish at night.

Habitat

Its Pokédex habitat is Urban, and a Sword Pokédex entry says they were seen all over Galar back in the day. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or transfer, or by evolving Koffing in The Teal Mask. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

It feeds on dust, germs and especially the gases that garbage and toxic waste give off.

Powers

Levitate and Neutralizing Gas are shared with Koffing, and its hidden Ability is Stench. It hits with Sludge Bomb and Belch and can use Explosion. Galarian Weezing is a Poison and Fairy type, 3 m tall and 16 kg, with hat-like tubes that release purified air and gas clouds that drift around its faces like a moustache. Its hidden Ability is Misty Surge and its signature move is Strange Steam. With 120 base Defense, either form is tough.

Name origin

Weezing may be a twist on 'wheezing'. The Japanese name is Matadogas (マタドガス), which may combine mata ('again') with doku-gasu ('poison gas'), or may come from mustard gas.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Weezing may be based on a floating naval mine and on smog, and its three joined spheres resemble a molecule. Galarian Weezing appears to draw on steam engines and a Victorian British gentleman in a chimney hat. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Weezing evolves from Koffing at level 35, and does so in its Galarian form if the level-up happens in Galar.

In the games

Galarian Weezing joined the original Generation I Weezing in Sword and Shield. Bulbapedia lists Weezing as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A, though a statue of one stands outside the Rust Syndicate Office.

In the anime

James's Koffing evolved into Weezing in 'Dig Those Diglett!'. Ash used a Weezing in 'The Ultimate Test', where it beat the instructor's Flareon.

Fun facts

  • Galarian Weezing was the earliest Galarian form to get an official reveal, according to Bulbapedia.
  • The Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Pokédex entries claim triplet Weezing exist, but Bulbapedia says none has appeared in any Pokémon media.
  • Galarian Weezing matches Xerneas at 3 m, which Bulbapedia counts as the tallest Fairy type apart from Arceus's Fairy form.

Pokédex entries

It can't suck in air quite as well as a Galarian Weezing, but the toxins it creates are more potent than those of its counterpart. (Shield)

It mixes gases between its two bodies. It's said that these Pokémon were seen all over the Galar region back in the day. (Sword)

This Pokémon lives and grows by absorbing poison gas, dust, and germs that exist inside garbage. (Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

Weezing alternately shrinks and inflates its twin bodies to mix together toxic gases inside. The more the gases are mixed, the more powerful the toxins become. The Pokémon also becomes more putrid. (Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)

Weezing loves the gases given off by rotted kitchen garbage. This Pokémon will find a dirty, unkempt house and make it its home. At night, when the people in the house are asleep, it will go through the trash. (Ruby, Omega Ruby)

Very rarely, a sudden mutation can result in two small Koffing twins becoming conjoined as a Weezing. (FireRed, Y)
