Lore

Biology

Tyrunt is a small, dinosaur-like biped, 0.8 m tall and 26 kg, with a big blunt head, two orange spikes on top, tiny two-clawed arms and a ruff of white, primitive-looking feathers. The Pokédex says it lived 100 million years ago and that its jaws can chew up an automobile, though one entry notes theories that its restored form differs from the original.

Behaviour

Tyrunt is selfish and spoiled, and it likes to be pampered. The Pokédex says it can seriously hurt its Trainer without meaning to when it is only playing.

Habitat

The Pokédex says Tyrunt is restored from a fossil. It is wild in Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra and in Hyperspace Lumiose in the Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC.

Powers

Its Ability Strong Jaw strengthens biting moves, so Bite and Crunch hit harder, and Sturdy is its hidden Ability. It also learns Rock Slide, Dragon Claw and Earthquake. Its base Attack of 89 is far above its base Speed of 48, so it hits hard but slowly.

Name origin

Tyrunt may combine Tyrannosaurus with either 'tyrant' or 'runt'. The Japanese name is Chigoras (チゴラス), perhaps from chigo ('baby') and a corrupted -saurus, with a nod to Tyrannosaurus.

Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Tyrunt and Tyrantrum, and Bulbapedia says they are based on Tyrannosaurus. Tyrunt looks like a juvenile tyrannosaurid, with ridges above the eyes like the lacrimal horns of relatives such as Gorgosaurus. The royalty theme probably plays on the name: 'tyranno-' is Greek for tyrant, 'rex' is Latin for king, and a Japanese name for the species means 'cruel ruler dragon'. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Tyrunt evolves into Tyrantrum at level 39, but only during the day. Amaura, the other Generation VI fossil, also evolves at level 39, but at night.

In the games

Gym Leader Grant fields a Tyrunt alongside an Amaura in the Cyllage Gym of X and Y, where the species first appeared. In Legends: Z-A the Pokémon Research Lab in the Vert District can revive one from a Jaw Fossil. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

In the anime

Grant's Tyrunt debuted in 'Climbing the Walls!', beating both Froakie and Fletchling in a Gym battle against Ash before Pikachu's Thunderbolt stopped it. In 'The Tiny Caretaker!', a stolen Tyrunt escapes Team Rocket and is found by Bonnie.

Fun facts

  • In X and Y, Glittering Cave offered a choice between the Jaw Fossil, which revives into Tyrunt, and the Sail Fossil, which revives into Amaura.
  • Tyrunt and Tyrantrum are the only Rock and Dragon types, and the only Rock types in the Dragon Egg Group.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, a Team Flare Grunt's Tyrunt grabs the Manectite Clemont had located on behalf of the manga's X.
