Lore
Biology
Vanillish is 1.1 m tall and 41 kg, with a big rounded white upper body topped by swirled snow. Its eyes are dark blue, small ice crystals sit at their sides, and two more sit below its dark blue mouth. Its stubby limbs look like icicles, and its pointed lower body looks like one large icicle.
Behaviour
Vanillish grows its icy body by drinking pure water, and the Pokédex says it chills the air around it to make ice particles, which it uses to hide or to freeze foes. One entry says it shatters frozen opponents with powerful headbutts. Hot days make it melt, and refreezing it can leave its body slightly warped.
Habitat
The Pokédex says snowy mountains are its habitat, and that during an ancient ice age it moved to southern areas. In Legends: Z-A you get it by evolving Vanillite, and in the Mega Dimension DLC it appears in the 3 star and 4 star Ice zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet.
Powers
Vanillish has the Abilities Ice Body and Snow Cloak, with Weak Armor hidden. In Sword and Shield it learns Avalanche and Icicle Spear, then Ice Beam at level 44, Blizzard at 50 and Sheer Cold at 56. Its 80 base Special Attack and 75 Special Defense make it a sturdy middle stage.
Name origin
Vanillish may combine 'vanilla' with 'delish', slang for delicious. The Japanese name is Vanirich (バニリッチ), which may join 'vanilla' with 'rich'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Vanillish is based on soft-serve ice cream in a cone, with the snow as the scoop and the ice as the wafer.
Evolution notes
Vanillish evolves from Vanillite at level 35 and into Vanilluxe at level 47.
In the games
Icirrus City Gym Leader Brycen, a former movie star turned Trainer, uses a Vanillish in Black and White, the games where Vanillish debuted.
In the anime
Brycen's Vanillish battled Ash in 'Caution: Icy Battle Conditions!', opening against Krokorok before Scraggy beat it with Focus Blast and Headbutt. It debuted in 'The Mighty Accelguard to the Rescue!' under Dr. Ferrara, also known as Cryogonal Man.
