Lore
Biology
Vanillite is 0.4 m tall and 5.7 kg. A swirl of snow covers its head, but beneath it is a head made of the same ice as its body, with dark blue eyes and mouth. It has pale blue crystals on its cheeks, stubby arms and a small body flecked with ice. Bulbapedia says the snow can melt in heat or from being touched too much, which embarrasses it.
Behaviour
Vanillite sleeps buried in the snow and takes energy from the morning sun. It cannot cope with hot places, so it exhales cold air to stay comfortable, and in warm regions it shrinks little by little. Bulbapedia names Glalie as its natural predator.
Habitat
No Pokédex entry names a habitat, though several have it sleeping buried in snow. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zones 7 and 12, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's 3 star Ice zone of Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.
Powers
Vanillite has the Abilities Ice Body and Snow Cloak, with Weak Armor hidden. In Sword and Shield it learns Icy Wind, Avalanche and Icicle Spear, then Ice Beam, Blizzard and finally Sheer Cold at level 48. Its base stats are modest, with 36 HP and 65 Special Attack.
Name origin
Vanillite may combine 'vanilla' with 'lite' (reduced), 'delight' or 'stalactite'. The Japanese name is Vanipeti (バニプッチ), which may join 'vanilla' with the French 'petit' (small).
Design inspiration
James Turner designed Vanillite and its evolved forms, according to Bulbapedia. It is based on soft-serve ice cream in a small cup or a child-sized cone, and it also somewhat resembles a snowball.
Evolution notes
Vanillite becomes Vanillish at level 35, and Vanillish becomes Vanilluxe at level 47.
In the games
In Side Mission 044 of Legends: Z-A, a perfumer named Odette says the snow on Vanillite smells softly sweet and that one sniff is enough to bring a cool feeling over you. Vanillite debuted in Black and White.
In the anime
Trip's Vanillite debuted in 'Ash and Trip's Third Battle!', where it faced Ash's Tepig and both were knocked out. In 'Thawing an Icy Panic!', a lone Vanillite cut off from its Vanillish and Vanilluxe becomes a minor celebrity in Coumarine City until they are reunited.
