Lore

Biology

Swanna is a white swan, 1.3 m tall and 24.2 kg, with a long curving neck and a long yellow bill topped by a black cere. A crest of white feathers sits on its head, and its large wings curve away from its body.

Behaviour

Swanna starts to dance at dusk. With the leader at the centre, the flock moves in perfect time, which the Pokédex says builds its unity. Artists are said to have taken inspiration from watching Swanna dance in the light of dawn.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Fellhorn Gorge and the Kitakami Wilds as part of The Teal Mask, and in 4 star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Swanna has the Abilities Keen Eye and Big Pecks, with Hydration hidden. It learns Bubble Beam, Air Slash and Roost, then Brave Bird at level 47 and Hurricane at 55, and can learn Surf and Hydro Pump by TM. With 98 base Speed and 87 in both Attack and Special Attack, it is a fast mixed attacker.

Name origin

Swanna comes from 'swan' and may also include 'ballerina'. The Japanese name is the same, Swanna (スワンナ).

Design inspiration

The model for Swanna is a mute swan, and Bulbapedia notes that the light-blue plumage on its underside resembles a bikini. It also says its look seems to draw on Odette, the heroine of the ballet Swan Lake. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Swanna evolves from Ducklett at level 35 and is the last stage of the line.

In the games

Skyla, the Gym Leader of Mistralton City in Black and White, always leads with a Swanna as her signature Pokémon, and Swanna debuted in those games. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity a Swanna is a major character who runs Swanna House, a hotel and restaurant. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Multiple Swanna debuted in the first Best Wishes episode, 'In The Shadow of Zekrom!'. Skyla's Swanna beat Cilan's Crustle and Stunfisk in 'Cilan Takes Flight!', then beat Ash's Pikachu in 'An Amazing Aerial Battle!' before falling to his newly evolved Unfezant.
