Lore
Biology
Vivillon is 1.2 m tall and 17 kg. It has a round grey head, big black pixelated eyes and thin antennae tipped with oval scales. Its wings always have black edges and blocky markings, but the colours and patterns vary hugely, and the Pokédex says they depend on the climate and landscape of the place it was born. In battle it scatters colourful scales that the Pokédex calls toxic.
Behaviour
Bulbapedia says Vivillon is very good at finding water, and the anime Pokédex says following one will lead you to a spring. In the anime its scales can also calm an opponent's fighting spirit.
Habitat
The Pokédex says Vivillon live all over the world. In Scarlet and Violet they are found in North Province and the East Paldean Sea, and in Legends: Z-A across Lumiose and in Hyperspace Lumiose in the Mega Dimension DLC.
Powers
Its Abilities are Shield Dust and Compound Eyes, with Friend Guard hidden. It starts with Poison Powder, Stun Spore and Sleep Powder, and learns Bug Buzz at level 35, Quiver Dance at level 45 and Hurricane at level 50. With base Special Attack 90 and Speed 89 it is a quick special attacker.
Name origin
Vivillon may combine 'vivid' and 'papillon', French for 'butterfly', and could also play on 'brillant' ('brilliant'). The Japanese name is Viviyon (ビビヨン), which may also involve bi ('beauty').
Design inspiration
Vivillon is a butterfly. Bulbapedia suggests its many patterns may echo Papilio dardanus, a real butterfly with over 14 known forms, and that its blocky markings come from pixel art. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Vivillon evolves from Spewpa at level 12.
In the games
In X and Y, its first games, a Vivillon's pattern follows the region set on your Nintendo 3DS when you made the save file. In Scarlet and Violet wild Vivillon are all Fancy Pattern unless a Pokémon GO postcard changes them for 24 hours. In Legends: Z-A wild ones are Meadow Pattern, or Garden Pattern in Hyperspace Lumiose; most of the other patterns come through Pokémon HOME.
In the anime
Viola's Meadow Pattern Vivillon debuted in 'A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!', beating Ash's Fletchling in the Gym battle and the rematch. In 'To Catch a Pokémon Smuggler!' a group of Spewpa evolve into Vivillon in six different patterns.
