Lore
Biology
Wattrel is a tiny black seabird, 0.4 m (1'04") tall and 3.6 kg (7.9 lbs), with a grey-blue chest, yellow feathers on its wings and a yellow crescent marking across its face. It has a nub-like head, a fairly long orange beak, small webbed orange feet and a forked tail. The Pokédex says it flies so that its wings catch the wind, and the bones inside react by producing electricity.
Behaviour
Wattrel hunts by diving into the ocean, and the Pokédex says it catches prey by electrocuting it. Its nests feel strangely crackly to the touch, and the Pokédex adds that they are a popular delicacy.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it makes its nests on coastal cliffs. In Scarlet and Violet it is found over Paldea's seas and beaches, including the East, South and West Paldean Seas.
Diet
Bulbapedia names Arrokuda as the kind of prey it shocks.
Powers
Its Ability Wind Power doubles the power of its next Electric move when a wind move hits it. Volt Absorb is its other regular Ability, with Competitive hidden. It learns Thunder Shock, Spark, Volt Switch and Discharge, plus Quick Attack, Pluck, Roost, Dual Wingbeat and Agility. Its base stats total only 280, with its best being Speed 70, so it is meant to evolve into Kilowattrel.
Name origin
Wattrel combines watt and petrel. The Japanese name is Kaiden (カイデン), which may play on kai ('sea'), kaien (the Japanese word for the storm petrel) and raiden ('thunder and lightning').
Design inspiration
Wattrel appears modelled on a storm petrel. Its stormy, lightning theme may play on the old belief that storm petrels signal bad weather at sea, and its head and eyes may suggest an aviator's cap. Its crackling nests may reference edible bird's nests, a delicacy in parts of Asia. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Wattrel evolves into Kilowattrel at level 25.
In the games
Iono, Levincia's Gym Leader, uses a level 23 Wattrel in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Roy's Wattrel debuted in 'An Unexpected Picnic!' by stealing Roy's sandwich, then could not escape with its flock when cornered. Roy caught it in the next episode, and it evolved into Kilowattrel in 'Wattrel's High Wind Warning!'.
