Bellibolt official artwork

Bellibolt is a Electric-type Pokémon, the EleFrog Pokémon, number 939 (#0939) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 113 kg.

Bellibolt is the EleFrog Pokémon, a plump, easygoing Electric type that makes electricity with a belly-button dynamo every time its wobbly body squashes and stretches. The two 'eyeballs' on its head are not eyes at all.

How to pronounce Bellibolt

Bellibolt is pronounced BEL-ee-bohlt. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Bellibolt is a large, round, squishy frog, 1.2 m (3'11") tall and 113 kg (249.1 lbs), mostly green, with orange markings over its head, back and lower half and small orange feet. Its grey belly sits under a see-through membrane, with a yellow organ inside that looks like a navel: the belly-button dynamo. As its strong stomach muscles expand and contract, the dynamo produces electricity, which the Pokédex says is released through the eyeball-like bumps on its head.

Behaviour

Bellibolt can move quickly but usually chooses to be sluggish. Bulbapedia says it is easygoing and hard to train to start fights, because it does not notice opponents until it is attacked.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it is rarely seen in the wild, and only now and then along riverbanks, and Serebii lists river as its biome. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in places such as Tagtree Thicket, Casseroya Lake and Glaseado Mountain.

Powers

Its Ability Electromorphosis doubles the power of its next Electric move whenever it is hit, and only Bellibolt is known to have it. Static is its other regular Ability, with Damp hidden. It uses Discharge, Zap Cannon and Electric Terrain, with Slack Off for recovery. With base HP 109 and Special Attack 103 it is a bulky special attacker, though its Speed of 45 is poor.

Name origin

Bellibolt combines belly and bolt. The Japanese name is Harabarie (ハラバリー), which may combine hara (belly) and baribari, a crackling sound.

Design inspiration

Bellibolt looks like a frog, perhaps the Cuyaba dwarf frog, which has big fake eyes on its backside. The link between frogs and electricity may nod to Galvani's experiments with frog legs, and its belly dynamo may recall a plasma globe. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Bellibolt is the final form of Tadbulb, and no level is needed: a Thunder Stone does it.

In the games

Bellibolt is the partner Pokémon of Iono, the Electric-type Gym Leader of Levincia, who uses a level 23 one alongside Wattrel, Luxio and Mismagius in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Iono's Bellibolt debuted in 'Someone We Can't See! Whosawhatsit?' and Terastallized into an Electric type in 'Trending Terastallization! Dance, Dance, Quaxly!', in her Tera Training battle against Dot.

Fun facts

  • Bellibolt was teased on 12 October 2022 in a video asking fans to guess Iono's partner Pokémon, and was revealed two days later.
  • At night its stomach makes a strange noise to show that it is hungry, according to Bulbapedia, which cites the official Scarlet and Violet site.
  • One fixed Bellibolt at Casseroya Lake in Scarlet and Violet has a Water Tera Type, even though it is a pure Electric Pokémon.
