Lore

Biology

Wigglytuff is a bean-shaped, rabbit-eared Pokémon with pink fur, a white belly, large blue eyes and a curled tuft on its head. It is 1.0 m tall and weighs 12 kg. It sheds its fur with the seasons, and the clippings are spun into a luxurious yarn.

Behaviour

Wigglytuff is proud of its fur. By inhaling deeply it can inflate seemingly without limit, up to 20 times larger according to one entry, and then bounces along like a balloon. Wigglytuff compete to see which can inflate the most, and if it is in a bad mood it puffs up to scare opponents. Two snuggled together are said to be reluctant to separate.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a grassland Pokémon, though Bulbapedia notes its stone evolution means it is rarely found in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it is in Paldea's North Province, and in Legends: Z-A it appears wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Cute Charm can infatuate attackers that make contact, Competitive sharply raises its Special Attack when its stats are lowered, and its hidden Ability is Frisk. It hits with Hyper Voice, Play Rough and Body Slam, and sings foes to sleep. With base Special Attack 85 as its best attacking stat but a Defense of only 45, it leans on its huge HP rather than its defences.

Name origin

Wigglytuff may combine 'wiggly' with 'tough' or 'tuft', a bunch of hair. The Japanese name is Pukurin (プクリン), which may blend ぷくぷく pukupuku (plump and cute) with くりくり kurikuri (round and big) and プリン purin (pudding).

Design inspiration

Wigglytuff seems modelled on a balloon, and given its beta name, the swirl on its head may recall custard or a soft-serve curl. Its long ears, Fairy typing and Moon Stone evolution may also link it to the Moon rabbit of folklore. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Wigglytuff evolves from Jigglypuff with a Moon Stone and is the last stage of the Igglybuff line.

In the games

Wigglytuff leads Wigglytuff's Guild in Treasure Town in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, where he is odd but exceptionally strong.

In the anime

Wigglytuff debuted in the film 'Mewtwo Strikes Back' as Neesha's Pokémon, cloned by Mewtwo. Its series debut came in 'Lights, Camera, Quack-tion', as the lead in a movie with Misty's Psyduck.

Fun facts

  • In the Red and Green beta its English name was Custard.
  • The Guildmaster loves Perfect Apples, which are practically all he eats, and bounces one on his head at dinner.
  • Harley's Wigglytuff in 'Thinning the Hoard!' wears a sinister expression, which may reflect its Trainer.
