Lore

Biology

Zeraora is a bipedal, cat-like Pokémon, 1.5 m tall and 44.5 kg, with yellow and black fur and a lightning-bolt whisker on each cheek. A ponytail of fur hangs between its shoulders, and its clawed forepaws have light blue pads. Sparks leap from the pads on its limbs. A manga tie-in to its film says it has no organ for making electricity, so it gathers it from outside and uses currents from its pads to build a magnetic field for levitating and speeding along.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Zeraora closes on enemies at lightning speed and shreds them with its claws, and even a dodged swipe shocks the target with flying sparks. Bulbapedia notes that its fur stands on end when it uses a lot of power, and that it has turned up in towns, seeking battles or acting as a bodyguard.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

Powers

Zeraora's only Ability is Volt Absorb, which turns Electric moves aimed at it into healing. Plasma Fists is a move no other known Pokémon can learn, and it also uses Wild Charge and Close Combat. The Pokédex says Mega Zeraora, reached with Zeraorite, stores 10 lightning strikes' worth of electricity and, once it stops limiting itself, ranks among the strongest Electric Pokémon. Even without Mega Evolution, base Speed 143 and Attack 112 make it a fast, hard-hitting attacker.

Name origin

Zeraora may blend Zeus, the Greek god of thunder, the Arabic zarra ('to shine') and the Japanese tora ('tiger'); Bulbapedia adds that tora means 'thunder' in Faroese. The Japanese name is Zeraora (ゼラオラ).

Design inspiration

Takao Unno designed Zeraora. Its look may draw on cats and tigers, and its Electric type could allude to Kanehekili, a Hawaiian thunder god, or to the raijū, a Japanese lightning beast sometimes drawn as a cat. Its slashing speed may echo the kamaitachi, and Mega Zeraora's tail splitting in two may nod to the two-tailed nekomata. These are fan readings.

In the games

Zeraora was a Mythical event Pokémon in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where it is the last entry in the Alola Pokédex, and it later reached Sword and Shield through Pokémon HOME. Mega Zeraora arrived with Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC, where Bulbapedia lists Zeraora in Hyperspace Lumiose once a Mystery Gift is activated. It is also playable in Pokémon UNITE.

In the anime

Zeraora first appeared in the film The Power of Us, set in Fula City, where a fire fifty years earlier left it hostile towards people. In the series, Dia, a former Ultra Ranger, had befriended one, and in 'Battling the Beast Within!' it helps Ash and Pikachu against an Ultra Beast before beating Pikachu in a battle.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia, citing the Pokécology book, says Zeraora shares the record for fastest known Pokémon with Raikou, at 720,000 km/h (450,000 mph).
  • A Shiny Zeraora was unlocked once one million victories had been won against Dynamax Zeraora in The Isle of Armor, which Bulbapedia says makes Zeraora the sole Mythical Pokémon ever met in a Max Raid Battle.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Mega Zeraora has the highest base Speed of any Mega-Evolved Pokémon, and that its Attack of 157 and total of 700 are the highest of any Electric type.
  • Bulbapedia says Zeraora is the only Electric-type Mythical Pokémon, not counting Arceus holding a Zap Plate.
