Held items basics

One item per Pokémon: Leftovers, Choice items, Focus Sash and more, and the catch that comes with each. Match the item to the job.

Trainer lesson · 4 minutes · 5 steps and a 5-question quiz

One item each

A Pokémon can hold one item at a time, and the item works on its own in battle, no command needed. Held items come in a few families:

  • Recovery: Leftovers restores a little HP every turn.
  • Choice items: a big boost to one stat, but the Pokémon is stuck with the first move it picks.
  • Damage boosters: Life Orb hits harder but costs some HP.
  • Survival: Focus Sash lets a full-HP Pokémon survive a knockout hit with 1 HP.
  • One-use items: used up the moment they trigger.

Most items need no setup, but a few are made for one species: the Light Ball only helps Pikachu.

Try it: Pick the right item

Read the situation, then choose the item that fits. Each answer shows what all three items do. (interactive on pokee.si)

Every item has a catch

Powerful items usually cost something:

  • Choice Band, Specs and Scarf lock the holder into one move until it switches out.
  • Life Orb drains 10% of the holder’s HP each time it hurts an opponent.
  • Assault Vest raises Special Defense by 50%, but the holder cannot choose status moves.
  • Eviolite only works while the Pokémon can still evolve.

That is why choosing an item is part of building a team, not just a bonus.

Quick check

Which of these items only helps one species?

Answer: Light Ball (Pikachu). The Light Ball doubles Pikachu’s Attack and Special Attack and does nothing for anyone else.

Items outside battle too

Some held items matter before a battle ever starts. An Everstone stops its holder from evolving, and if a breeding parent holds one, the Egg inherits that parent’s Nature.

Mega Stones are also held items: a Pokémon must hold its own to Mega Evolve. You will meet those in the Mega Evolution lesson.

Quiz

The lesson ends with a five-question quiz built from the Pokédex data, and earns the Item Collector badge.
