Case file 02

Where did Arceus come from?

The games say Arceus hatched from an egg and shaped the world. So where did the egg come from?

Case status: Open. The games leave it unanswered, so nobody can say for sure.

What the games say

Official text and events

Arceus's Pokédex entries tell a creation story, and the entries change a little from game to game. Diamond says it shaped the universe with 1,000 arms. Pearl says it was born before the universe even existed. HeartGold, SoulSilver and X say Sinnoh legends have it hatching from an egg and shaping everything. Platinum and Black and White say the egg was in a place where there was nothing at all.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus goes further. Hisuian mythology there calls Arceus the creator of all things, and says the light it gives off guides and protects every Pokémon. The egg is mentioned. Where the egg came from is not.

What fans think

Theories, not facts

Fans love the "egg first" puzzle: if Arceus came from an egg, who or what laid it? Some fans say the egg was left over from an older universe. Others say it is just how the myth is told, and the story was never meant to have a start.

There is also a friendly fan argument over Mew and Arceus. Mew's entries say scientists think it is the ancestor of Pokémon, while Arceus's entries say it made everything. Fans like to ask which one is "older". Nobody has an answer, and both are stories told inside the Pokémon world.

Our verdict

Case status: Open

Open, and it may be meant to stay that way. These are legends told by people in the games, not a report from a scientist. They agree on the egg and on the shaping, and they stop there.
