Does Jirachi grant wishes?

It sleeps for a thousand years and wakes for seven days. What is the wish part?

Case status: Open. The games leave it unanswered, so nobody can say for sure.

What the games say

Official text and events

Jirachi's entries are consistent about the sleep. Ruby and Sapphire say it wakes up if you sing to it in a voice of purity. Sword says it wakes once every 1,000 years and stays awake for only seven days. Platinum and others say it can grant wishes for just one week in each thousand years.

The wish part is always told as a legend. Ruby says that it will make true any wish written on the notes attached to its head. Emerald says it sleeps inside a tough crystal shell that protects it from enemies. The games use words like "said to" and "believed". None of the entries we checked describes a wish coming true.

What fans think

Theories, not facts

Fans noticed that Jirachi's paper-like head strips look like the wish papers tied to bamboo at Tanabata, Japan's star festival, usually celebrated on 7 July. This is a design link that fans have pointed out. Game Freak has not confirmed it.

Our verdict

Case status: Open

Open. It is the sort of mystery that is meant to stay a story. The games tell the legend of the wish and never show it.
