Lore

Biology

Abomasnow walks upright, a hulking figure under shaggy white fur, with pale purple eyes, bushy eyebrows and fur hanging over its mouth. It is 2.2 m tall and weighs 135.5 kg. Spiky dark green growth like evergreen needles covers its hands, feet and tail, and four pinecone-like buds grow on its back. Bulbapedia says the chest fur is longer on a female.

Behaviour

Abomasnow prefers to be alone. The Pokédex says it lives a quiet life on snowy mountains and hides itself by whipping up blizzards, and that it appears when the snow flowers bloom and retreats when the petals fall. A Legends: Arceus entry says it can split huge boulders. The Sword entry says it chases packs of Darumaka away from Snover by swinging its arms like hammers.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it on mountains that stay snowbound all year. In Sinnoh it is found outside Mt. Coronet, and in Scarlet and Violet on Glaseado Mountain.

Powers

Abomasnow's Ability is Snow Warning, with Soundproof hidden, and it learns Blizzard, Wood Hammer, Ice Shard, Icy Wind and Aurora Veil. Holding the Abomasite lets it Mega Evolve into Mega Abomasnow, which is 2.7 m tall and 185 kg, whose back buds grow into great shafts of ice. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex says Mega Abomasnow can whip up blizzards of -30 °C (-22 °F). Mega Abomasnow has 132 base Attack and Special Attack but only 30 base Speed, making it a slow, heavy hitter.

Name origin

Abomasnow may come from 'abominable snowman', another name for the yeti. The Japanese name is Yukinooh (ユキノオー), which may come from yuki no ō ('snow king').

Design inspiration

Abomasnow appears to add a yeti to Snover's snow-covered tree look. Bulbapedia also suggests juhyō, trees completely covered in snow that are nicknamed 'snow monsters' in Japan. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Abomasnow evolves from Snover at level 40.

In the games

Abomasnow first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, and its Mega Evolution arrived in Generation VI. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 5-star Tera Raid Battles. In Legends: Z-A it is in the base game's Bleu District (Wild Zone 12) and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Candice's female Abomasnow made its series debut in 'Classroom Training!' and, in the next episode's Gym battle, beat Ash's Staraptor and Grotle before Chimchar's Flame Wheel took it down. Wulfric's Abomasnow Mega Evolved against Ash-Greninja in 'A Real Icebreaker!'.

Fun facts

  • Abomasnow is currently first among all Pokémon in alphabetical order, as Bulbapedia notes.
  • Abomasnow's first television appearance, in 'Pikachu's Ice Adventure', has it fighting a Froslass until both realise their quarrel is wrecking ice statues.
  • A flashback in 'This Magik Moment!' shows an Abomasnow and a Froslass fighting so hard that their blizzard stops a plane reaching Alola.
  • In Pokémon Sleep, a sleeping Abomasnow still stirs up blizzards by swinging its arms, and researchers do not know whether it is a habit to hide or just sleepy flailing.
