Lore
Biology
Altaria is 1.1 m tall and weighs 20.6 kg. Its blue body is feathered in fluffy white and its wings look like clouds, with two long blue plumes streaming from the back of its head, a short hooked beak and white cheek patches. The Pokédex says it rides updrafts on its buoyant wings and climbs high into the blue sky.
Behaviour
Altaria has a kind nature. If it bonds with a person, the Pokédex says it gently wraps its friend in soft wings, then hums. The FireRed and LeafGreen entries say a beautiful melody trilling deep in the mountains, far from people, is Altaria's humming.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says Altaria lives in forests and mountain ranges. In Scarlet and Violet it ranges across Paldea and the Indigo Disk's Canyon Biome, with a Fairy Tera Type version in West Province Area One. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zone 18, with an Alpha in Wild Zone 20, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Natural Cure heals status problems on switching out, and Cloud Nine is hidden. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Dragon Pulse on evolving, then Moonblast at level 44 and Perish Song, and can use Dragon Dance. With Altarianite it Mega Evolves, a form that first arrived with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, becoming Dragon and Fairy type with the Ability Pixilate; the Z-A Pokédex says a few strands of its fluffy down could hoist a dump truck. Base Special Defense 105 and Defense 90 make it a bulky Dragon.
Name origin
Altaria may combine 'alto' and 'aria', both musical words that fit its singing, and may nod to the star Altair. The Japanese name is Tyltalis (チルタリス), probably built on Tyltto, Swablu's name, plus alis, Latin for 'wings'.
Design inspiration
Altaria appears to be based mainly on a bluebird, with possible Chinese dragon influence, since both are lucky symbols there. It may also draw on the Peng, a giant Chinese bird with cloud-like wings, or on a cockatiel: its Shiny form resembles a lutino cockatiel. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Altaria evolves from Swablu at level 35.
In the games
Altaria is the signature Pokémon of Winona, the Flying-type Gym Leader of Fortree City, from its debut in Ruby and Sapphire. She always leads with it.
In the anime
In 'Sky High Gym Battle!', Winona's Altaria faces Ash's Grovyle and loses. Lisia's Altaria, Ali, can Mega Evolve and is used in a Contest in 'Reuniting for the First Time!', the same episode in which Goh catches his own.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia says Altaria is unique: its pre-evolution Swablu and its Mega form share no types at all, since Swablu is Normal and Flying and Mega Altaria has a completely different pair.
- Bulbapedia says Pokémon Sleep treats Altaria as a pure Dragon type, which made it the only Dragon-type Pokémon available when the game launched.
- Reaching level 100 takes Altaria just 600,000 experience points, which Bulbapedia says ties it with the Applin family for the lowest of any Dragon-type Pokémon.
