Amaura official artwork

Amaura is a Rock/Ice-type Pokémon, the Tundra Pokémon, number 698 (#0698) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs 25.2 kg.

Amaura is the Tundra Pokémon, a gentle sauropod revived from a fossil that spent over 100 million years frozen in ice. The Pokédex says it is unlikely to survive for long in today's heat, and, as the anime shows, its whinny makes auroras appear in the night sky.

Lore

Biology

Amaura is a light-blue, long-necked quadruped, 1.3 m tall and 25.2 kg, with a white underbelly and a short, stubby tail. Two iridescent, sail-like structures rise above its large blue eyes, yellow at the base and fading to pink at the tips, and a dark blue crystal sits on each flank. Each hind foot has one white claw.

Behaviour

Amaura is calm. The Pokédex says it lived among others of its kind, free of violent predators such as Tyrantrum.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it belongs to the ancient cold, and some are still found frozen in ice. It is wild in Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra and in Hyperspace Lumiose in the Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC.

Powers

Amaura's Ability Refrigerate turns its Normal moves into stronger Ice moves, and Snow Warning is hidden. It learns Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Aurora Beam, Ice Beam and Freeze-Dry, along with Ancient Power. Its stats are modest and spread out, with HP its best at 77.

Name origin

Amaura may combine Amargasaurus and 'aurora'. The Japanese name is Amarus (アマルス), possibly a contraction of Amargasaurus.

Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Amaura and Aurorus on Amargasaurus, a sauropod with sail-like spine extensions. Bulbapedia says he chose sauropods to pair with the Tyrannosaurus-based Tyrantrum line, and Amargasaurus to set them apart from similar-shaped Pokémon such as Lapras, Meganium and Deino. The colour-shifting sails appear to be inspired by auroras, which may also explain its Ice type.

Evolution notes

Amaura evolves into Aurorus at level 39, but only at night.

In the games

Gym Leader Grant uses an Amaura in the Cyllage Gym of X and Y, where the species first appeared. In Legends: Z-A the Pokémon Research Lab in the Vert District can revive one from a Sail Fossil. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

In the anime

Amaura debuted with Aurorus in 'Coming Back into the Cold!', after both were found frozen in ice and revived. Team Rocket captured it, and it had to return to the Ambrette Town Fossil Laboratory in time. In Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, an injured Amaura is rescued by Volcanion.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says that in Generation VIII only Amaura and Aurorus were known to be able to have Refrigerate.
  • At 25.2 kg, Amaura is the lightest Ice type introduced in Generation VI.
  • Bulbapedia says Pokémon-Amie in X and Y shows that its sails change colour with its mood and that the crystals on its sides always stay at freezing temperature.
