Aurorus official artwork

Aurorus is a Rock/Ice-type Pokémon, the Tundra Pokémon, number 699 (#0699) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 2.7 m tall and weighs 225 kg.

Aurorus is the Tundra Pokémon, a quiet, kindly Rock and Ice sauropod whose body crystals blow out air as cold as -150°C (-240°F). Make it angry and it freezes everything around it; the Pokédex says its howl calls up auroras.

Lore

Biology

Aurorus is 2.7 m tall and weighs 225 kg. It is mostly blue, with two long, flowing sails running from its head down its neck, pale yellow at the base and bluish-purple at the edges. A white V-shaped marking with a crystal sits on its head, and a line of small ice crystals runs along each side. The Pokédex says it can use its diamond-shaped crystals to raise a wall of ice instantly.

Behaviour

Aurorus is usually quiet and kindly, but when rage grips it, it covers everything nearby in ice. One was found frozen solid inside a glacier, looking just as it did long ago, and the Pokédex says this became a big news event.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, only the glacier where one was found frozen solid. In Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra it wanders Snowslide Slope.

Powers

Aurorus has the Ability Refrigerate, which turns Normal moves into Ice moves, with Snow Warning hidden. It uses Freeze-Dry, Ice Beam, Blizzard and Aurora Beam, plus Earth Power and Ancient Power. Its big HP and solid special stats make it a bulky special attacker.

Name origin

Aurorus may combine 'aurora' and Amargasaurus. The Japanese name is Amaruruga (アマルルガ), probably also derived from Amargasaurus.

Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Aurorus on Amargasaurus but gave it a sail along its neck instead of spikes, out of personal preference. Bulbapedia suggests that the V-shaped mark and sails may recall a queen's tiara and the crystals a dress, a counterpart to Tyrantrum's king theme. That reading is a fan inference.

Evolution notes

Aurorus evolves from Amaura at level 39, only at night, and does not evolve further.

In the games

Champion Diantha uses an Aurorus in X and Y, its first game, and Grant brings one to the Battle Chateau. In Legends: Z-A you get it by evolving an Amaura, and wild ones appear in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose with a special scan.

In the anime

In 'Pride of a Champion!', Diantha's Aurorus was the first Pokémon she sent out against Lance in the Masters Eight Tournament, and Lance's Dragonite defeated it despite the type advantage. It reappears in 'It's... Champion Time!', losing to Leon's Rillaboom.
