Lore

Biology

Anorith is a greenish-grey arthropod, 0.7 m tall and 12.5 kg. Its round eyes sit on stalks, its head is black in the middle, with two red teardrop-shaped spots, and an X-shaped mouth is on its underside. Two large segmented claws hang beneath the head, and each side of the body carries four white, red-tipped wing-like limbs.

Behaviour

Anorith is a fast swimmer, rowing through the water with its eight wings like oars. The Pokédex says it hunts with its pair of claws, pulling prey out from among rocks on the sea floor. Revived Anorith released into today's ocean do not thrive, because seawater is no longer what it was in their era.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lived in the warm seas of ancient times, about 100 million years ago, and it is classed as a water's edge Pokémon.

Powers

Its Ability is Battle Armor, which blocks critical hits, with Swift Swim hidden. By levelling up it learns Metal Claw, Crush Claw, Rock Blast and X-Scissor. With base Attack 95 and Speed 75 it is a quick, hard-hitting early fighter, but its Defense is only 50.

Name origin

Anorith may combine Anomalocaris, an ancient sea animal, with anorthosite, a rock, and the suffix -lith, 'stone'. The Japanese name is Anopth (アノプス), which may blend Anomalocaris with Triops, a genus of small crustaceans.

Design inspiration

Anorith is closely based on Anomalocaris, an ancient marine arthropod, with some trilobite features. Bulbapedia adds that it greatly resembles brine shrimp, which have similar eyes and feathery protrusions along their sides.

Evolution notes

Anorith evolves into Armaldo at level 40.

In the games

Anorith returns from a Claw Fossil that is revived at Rustboro City's Devon Corporation in Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared. It returns in the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, with Surf encounters at Ballimere Lake, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Anorith debuted in 'Where's Armaldo?', where Professor Proctor and Annie Proctor studied it on Wales Island with the other Hoenn Fossil Pokémon. It eventually evolved into Armaldo.

Fun facts

  • Anorith and Armaldo are the only Rock and Bug dual types with Rock listed first; Shuckle, Dwebble and Crustle all list Bug first.
  • Among Pokémon that can have Swift Swim, only Anorith and Armaldo are weak to Water moves, according to Bulbapedia.
  • An Anorith can be seen in the opening sequence of the film 'Lucario and the Mystery of Mew'.
