Lore

Biology

Cradily is a plant-like echinoderm in green, 1.5 m tall and 60.4 kg, marked in yellow on its head, neck and chest. Eight pink tentacles ring its head like petals. The yellow circles on its head are false eyes, and Bulbapedia says the real ones are hidden in the dark crescent-shaped opening.

Behaviour

According to the Pokédex it roams the sea floor looking for food, and its weighty body acts as an anchor against rough seas. Prey gets wrapped in its eight tentacles and dissolved by a strong digestive fluid before it eats.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a sea Pokémon. In ancient times it came up onto beaches when the tide went out, searching the sand for prey.

Powers

Cradily shares Lileep's Abilities: Suction Cups, which keeps it from being forced out of battle, and Storm Drain, hidden. It learns Giga Drain, Ancient Power and Energy Ball by levelling up, and can be taught Stone Edge, Power Whip and Earthquake by TM. With base Defense 97 and Special Defense 107 it is built to absorb hits, though its Speed is only 43.

Name origin

Cradily may combine 'cradle' and 'lily', and could also involve 'crinoid', 'crag' and 'crazily'. The Japanese name is Yuradle (ユレイドル), which may blend yure ('shaking'), umiyuri ('sea lily') and 'cradle'.

Design inspiration

Like Lileep, Cradily is based on a crinoid, and Bulbapedia notes it may also draw on the sea anemone and the predatory tunicate. Its names and the placement of its tentacles may hint at a baby's mobile.

Evolution notes

Cradily evolves from Lileep at level 40 and does not evolve further.

In the games

Cradily is the evolved form of the revived Root Fossil Pokémon, a role it has held since its debut in Ruby and Sapphire. It can be found in the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, including Max Lair Dynamax Adventures, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Cradily debuted in 'Where's Armaldo?', as a resident of Wales Island. Steven Stone used one against Ash in their Masters Eight Tournament battle in 'Battling as Hard as Stone!', where it beat Gengar before losing to Pikachu.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Cradily and Lileep are the only Rock Pokémon whose body shape is classed as a head and a base.
  • Its Special Defense of 107 is the highest of any Grass or Rock type introduced in Generation III.
  • A Cradily was among the feuding armies that Sir Aaron calmed in 'Lucario and the Mystery of Mew'.
