Lileep official artwork

Lileep is a Rock/Grass-type Pokémon, the Sea Lily Pokémon, number 345 (#0345) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 23.8 kg.

Lileep is a Rock and Grass Pokémon that died out about 100 million years ago and exists today only because scientists revive it from a Root Fossil. It spent its life fixed to a rock on the sea floor, waiting for dinner to drift into its petal-shaped tentacles.

Lore

Biology

Lileep is a plant-like Fossil Pokémon, 1 m tall and 23.8 kg. A purple head sits on a yellow stem above a rounded purple body, and eight pink, dark-tipped tentacles ring an opening that hides two glowing yellow eyes. Four stubby roots grip the rock it lives on.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says it stays fixed to one rock and scans for prey from there, and that its suckers hold so firmly that rough surf cannot wash it away. It sways its tentacles to pass for seaweed, and when something unsuspecting comes close it swallows it whole.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a sea Pokémon that lived in the warm seas of ancient times.

Powers

Its Ability is Suction Cups, which stops it being forced out of battle, and its Hidden Ability is Storm Drain, which draws in Water moves and turns them into Special Attack. By levelling up it learns Ancient Power, Giga Drain and Energy Ball. With base Special Defense 87 it is a sturdy, slow support Pokémon.

Name origin

Lileep may combine 'lily' with 'deep', 'sleep', 'creep' or 'peep'. The Japanese name is Lilyla (リリーラ), which may blend 'lily' with the Spanish lila, 'lilac', for its purple colour.

Design inspiration

Lileep is based on a crinoid, or sea lily, a living marine animal related to starfish and sea urchins. Crinoid fossils are very common, which may be why Lileep became a Fossil Pokémon, and Bulbapedia suggests the tentacles may borrow from a sea anemone.

Evolution notes

Lileep evolves into Cradily at level 40.

In the games

Lileep returns from a Root Fossil that is revived at Rustboro City's Devon Corporation in Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared, and at the Oreburgh Mining Museum in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It is in the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Several Lileep debuted in 'Where's Armaldo?' among the Fossil Pokémon that Professor Proctor and Annie Proctor cared for on Wales Island.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that Lileep and Cradily are alone among Grass Pokémon in the Water 3 Egg Group.
  • Before Generation VIII, the Lileep family's Hidden Ability could be had only through the Pokémon Dream World, and it can now come from Max Raid Battles or an Ability Patch.
  • No Rock or Grass type introduced in Generation III is slower than Lileep.
